For a directorial debut Paddy Consindine did a terrific job and Peter Mullan is usually pretty outstanding in anything he appears in. To start off as such an unlikeable and unsympathetic character in the opening to the gradual shift of emphasis as the film progresses is not something that every actor can pull off. Everyone else is sterling and the story winds in different ways than you'd likely expect. Gritty, uncomfortable viewing at times but ultimately a morality/redemption tale it's well worth a watch...
