Americans own guns for self defence. Why don't they shoot when some lunatic goes on a killing rampage? Because owning guns does not keep anyone safe when the element of surprise is there. A gun kept in the closet at home is useless when your ambushed by a crazed murderer.

They actually have, google it. Every school should hire ex-police as teachers able to carry concealed too.

Does NOT owning a gun in that situation make it any safer? I guess maybe I shouldn't respond, but in what situation does not owning a gun make an attack safer for a potential victim?

It's like 100-to-1 the ratio of American civilians who carry a gun most of the time, compared with those who don't. Most of the time, there's nobody with a gun to shoot back. When someone shoots back, it's frequently LE off-duty.

The solution is more carrying, but I disagree that CCW is the answer, we need rifles, and you can't carry rifles concealed.

Practice.

You're able to hope much harder that you'll never be a victim, if you don't keep or bear a gun, it's been proven, shown scientifically to be true, just fall in line.

Fewer are caught in that "element of surprise" than they were during more peaceful times. Back in the old west, people packed guns, and were ready to use them at the drop of a hat. One never knew when an Indian would pop up from behind a bush.

We're seeing more people with concealed carry keeping these killers at bay...or taking them out before too much harm can be done. We need to see more of it.

Yep, just like when the death penalty was measured swiftly and the community was there to witness it, it was a deterrent to crime.

Didn't I read on a dollar note, "In gun we trust"?

Ambushed by a crazed murderer?..... :idunno:
How do these crazed killers get into folks homes? It's as if you want to fill your home with fast-firing guns, but cannot be bothered about the bolts, bars, chains, locks and glazing which can keep them out.

By all means keep a gun if you live in 'guns-awash America', but please just give a few moment's thought to how you can increase security at and around your home. Modern door and window systems raise security immensely, and if you've ever watched police trying to use a battering-ram on a modern PVC door then you'll know what I mean.

One way of helping to deter domestic crime is to make it look as if you've spent thousands on a CCTV system. All you need to do is contact CCTV installation companies outside your county and ask to purchase any camera units that have been removed in an updated installation. Get these installed outside your home and put up CCTV warning posters because idiots don't always see the cameras. Of course, if you're rich just install the real thing!

One problem with civilians carrying guns is that no matter how many holes they punch through paper, nor how many training programs they attend, in a panicked, terror-stricken, adrenalin filled crisis some civilians can and probably will make mistakes. In a situation where criminals or terrorists start a fire-fight in a large crowd the friendly fire deaths and kills will be huge. So good luck with that.

What is the ratio of the number of children killed or injured by guns when they find Mommy's Smith & Wesson in the closet to number of successful defenses by a gun carrier or home owner?
Gun Violence Archive indicates that from 2014 through 2016 and average of 658 children up to age 11 were killed or injured by guns, most it seems from finding one in the home. So far this year the number is 345. The numbers for older children are substantially higher.

It also only takes a little on line research to find information about the loss of shooting accuracy when a person is under stress. Even police officers who may score well at the range suffer significant accuracy losses when in a real gun fight with real bad guys. So don't kid yourself that when you are attacked you will be as good as John Wayne or James Bond.

A firearm that is not ready is just a paper weight. If you think people don't shoot or defend themselves with guns, read up. I can even direct you to a youtube channel. Most of them are in countries whose socialism government is out of control, but you get the idea. We are headed that way too.

Repeal the law that makes it a felony to defend your child at school. The left, including Republicans have this law to put the best people in society in prison where they can't fight back against socialism.

I am going to add to this a little bit.

12 Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall put away the evil from Israel. 13 And all the people shall hear and fear, and no longer act presumptuously.

This is about Israel and their strict laws, but the point remains about the death penalty being a deterrent to crime.

Nick,

Glock 19 comes highly recommended to me from people I know, both for reliability and cost. Got any other suggestions? I've shot it but am considering something a bit smaller for both me and the wife.
