The Earth's magnetic field does not shield us from space debris unless that debris happens to be hydrogen nuclei and other charged sub-atomic particles streaming off the sun. It has basically no effect at all on what would normally be considered debris like space rocks or pieces of our own satellites or whatever.

Still, the point is not entirely lost! Without the magnetic field, the atmosphere would go away rather quickly and it we'd all be dead, so...
