I never got in to Slayer. I tried, I can't remember what it was that turned me off, but the equation of pros and cons just didn't favor Slayer. They're in good company, I couldn't get in to Megadeth either, or Iron Maiden. The equation just didn't work out, for me, for them.

There is a lot of aural good in Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Slayer, but there just isn't enough for me, to counteract the challenges these bands impose on me as a listener as well. What's the expression; the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

It's good music to listen to if you want to race yourself 100mph down some back country road at night and drive yourself a cliff. That's about it.

You could try opera. Dovlet is pretty good but I'm not sure how often he's in the US. Meet him just by chance years ago. Still gives me a call about once or twice a year when he's in town. Always brings some nice whiskey from whatever country he was in last and usually a bit of homemade brandy to go along with it.

They don't use any microphones when they sing. It's really amazing how their voices are trained to carry so far without them. I can't even hear my wife talking to me from the next room.

I used to listen to a lot of metal. Still do every once in a while. There were so many cool bands from the early 80s. Seems many of them only did 1 or 2 albums then you never really heard from them again. Cirith Ungol did reunite not too long ago. Nothing like they used to be though.

I'd say I probably prefer Metallica over Megadeth. And Justice For All is still my all time favorite album, but Megadeth has a lot of great songs too. Holy Wars, Train of Consequences ect. Hard to pick a favorite.

But there is nothing like opera. Everyone should go to one, once a year just to be reminded of how beautiful music can sound. The world needs this now more than ever. Otherwise we forget there is more in this world than just the mediocracy and bleakness which the powers that be constantly cram down our throats and force us to accept.

I do not know who the baritone is. Obviously a world-class performer. These people do not market themselves. The tenor is Dovlet. He has life long residency now at the Hamburg Opera now. I am assuming the baritone does too. It is literally one of the most sought after positions in the world of opera today. People from all over the world compete for it.

This is a Russian opera which apparently was performed in Hamburg and televised live earlier this year, I am not familiar with it. But it sounds interesting. The subtitles are translated in to German (in the US they will likely have a digital ticker that translates into English near the ceiling)

Dovlet (referred to in this scene as "brother") is disturbed that he has had the same dream now for 3 nights. (if my german is correct) This dream involves him climbing a staircase that takes him above Moscow. And when he looks down he sees ants chasing people off of the street (?)

The Baritone (Referred to as Father) has not slept for 3 days. He has been up each night, writing something. That is all I understand.

@Idolater Here's a pic of me and him from earlier this summer when he was in town. And another he took of me and another buddy when he took us all out for my birthday last year. He had a Soviet military costume I wore the whole night. We were probably very lucky none of us got arrested on that day.

Anyways, I used to think these opera guys were just a bunch of fags. But I can assure you nothing could be farther from the truth. The fine arts are definitely not gay. They are a gift, meant to be enjoyed by normal and good people like us

If there's no opera near you, you could check for nearest art gallery instead. They often have little late night parties and get togethers at them on weekends and you get to meet the artist who is selling his work there. If anything it's just an excuse to get dressed up go somewhere. Normally they even have free drink, believe it or not.
