Would an originalist say something like "let the election decide," in reference to Supreme Court nominees? It seems to me that his spirit of the law and letter of the law are at odds.

He appears to be a hypocrite on the point.

The law gives the President the job. They don't like this President and so they don't want him to do his job. There's no division in spirit and letter here. The people spoke when they gave our President the right and responsibility to appoint. Now Republicans don't want that because they're hoping they'll win the office and then, suddenly, the next voice of the American people will be to their liking.
