"No country knows the total number of people infected with COVID-19. All we know is the infection status of those who have been tested...

This means that the counts of confirmed cases depend on how much a country actually tests. Without testing there is no data.

Testing is our window onto the pandemic and how it is spreading. Without data on who is infected by the virus we have no way of understanding the pandemic. Without this data we can not know which countries are doing well, and which are just underreporting cases and deaths.

To interpret any data on confirmed cases we need to know how much testing for COVID-19 the country actually does."

Even this does not go far enough. Taiwan has a very high bar for who would qualify to undergo a test. They do not usually test the general population, even if they show symptoms.

Yeah, if the mask mandates and lockdowns worked, then the hospitals should be empty and England should be Covid-free in just a couple of weeks.

They simply don't work.

If you think that such measures solve the problem within a coupla weeks then that in itself is a problem. Of ignorance. The numbers increase initially until such measures take effect as is well documented and for fairly obvious reasons. The UK is not going to be "Covid-19" free for a long time yet and neither is anywhere else, albeit some places are worse hit than others. Over here the NHS is at crisis point and it's just getting beyond silly to deny how serious this pandemic actually is. We have mutant strains of this thing that are transmitting at a far higher rate and without such measures the NHS would likely collapse, it yet might.

I wear a mask, not because I think it protects me from infection but in case I could pass it onto others if I'm infected without knowing it. Some seem to think that abiding by such mandates makes me a coward. Let them think that. I'll be having a vaccination when such becomes available and gladly at that.

I'm glad you wear a mask. I hope you don't wear a mask like most Democrats do. Or lock yourself down like most democrats do.

So, you want to double down on mandatory lockdowns despite the evidence that shows that they do not work. It's like people who think they can get socialism right the next time it's tried.

However, even your great hero Emmy-Award-winning governor Cuomo has given up on lockdowns. Are you ever going to realize the stupidity of mandatory lock-downs?

Wearing a mask because you care about the health and welfare of others makes you a decent human being.

I wear a mask for the reasons given prior, that's all. Nothing to do with "socialism" or any such at all. I don't want lockdowns any more than you do and I'm not a fan of how the UK administration has handled this crisis through tier restrictions either but for different reasons than you I suspect. This is a pandemic, not some bug that will magically disappear and has hit hard throughout the world. Sometimes I wonder if you realize that. Some folk still seem to think it's a "scam". It ain't. Over here it most assuredly ain't.

It shouldn’t be, however, in this case, it separates the decent from the selfish.

Frankly, it's the proverbial pain to wear the thing as I can barely see when I'm in the shop to buy stuff when the glasses steam up but hey, you just deal with it. You'd think with all of this outrage going on, we were being forced to go to the shops with a boulder attached to the shoes...

Your glasses fog up, eh? I guess that means potentially COVID-laced air is escaping from your mask. :chuckle:

Um, yes Stripe, just the same as they do when I walk into anywhere after being in the rain etc. If there's even a minute reduction in transmission then I'll continue to wear the things and by credible research, they do.

Meanwhile, we're up to ~27 vaccinations per 100 people here in Israel. Some of those are the round of second injections, which started last week. It looks like the UK is making good progress, and the US is getting started, despite the difficulties we read about in the press.

Looks like we've dispensed more than 5 times as many vaccinations as Israel.

Yes! Absolutely. When you've managed to vaccinate 37 times as many, it will be the same per capita.

I'm glad it is finally moving along in the US. I hope you can manage better. This is not a competitive sport.
