So: are you right wing good people in favor of national identity cards? Or does that infringe on your liberty?

If this donkey did not have me on ignore he would have seen that I agree with him.
In fact, we already have national ID cards. The are called social security card. They just need to have pictures required to be slapped on. The numbers already exist.

In our country, you don't vote as a member of the nation... you vote as a member of a state in a union of states.

That is a good point. But we agree on the premise, right? A photo ID is needed for voting, be it state or national.
I have no problem with a national ID. Like I said, we already have national ID cards, social security cards, they just need to have pictures put on.

When created (as if that matters in this world of almost total political corruption), it was clearly stated that this SS# was NOT to be used for identification... so much for that.

Centralized government is bad... always has been. The real point is NOT the photo, but the valid identification.

I do have a problem with that and adding a photo doesn't make it better.

Well, its sort of a distinction without a difference . . . yes, we have a national ID card but we promise into to use it as one . . wink wink . . although every citizen must have one . . winky winky

Of course centralized government is bad, but does a national ID change states rights? I don't think so. The fact that the ACLU is against them make me wonder if they are okay.

What other kind would you recommend?
If you're voting in a STATE election, then a STATE ID makes reasonable sense. Don't you think?
I was under the impression, possibly the wrong impression, that some would be opposed to mandatory ID cards, no matter who issued them.

Here in Israel we have elections, far too often. As in most countries, everybody has a national photo ID card, and everybody needs to present it at the polling place in order to vote.
I would be in favor of a state or national photo ID card solely for the purposes of voting to be issued only to those people who can demonstrate competence, similar to the requirements demanded of immigrants who want to become citizens.

This is a well-known path to discrimination.

Discrimination isn't bad, necessarily

I think it would be a wise move to discriminate against those who are incompetent having a voice in electing our leaders
I meant racism, disenfranchising certain groups.

And -how does one decide who is "competent in having a voice"? Who decides? The Party?

I know what you meant

Who decides the criteria necessary to be naturalized?
I believe Congress set the rules, though I am not familiar with the details. How will you feel about this if Congress passes a law saying that one must support gay marriage or abortion in order to vote?

Also, you are basically suggesting that all US citizens be subjected to the same sort of tests that immigrants are subjected to, in order to fulfill their right to vote, which rather makes the words "US citizen" meaningless.
