what merits?

the ability to con retards by promising crap he had no intention of delivering?

his dazzling record of legislative achievements?

or were you referring to his massive experience as an administrative leader?

no, it's clear that bammy lacked the experience and qualifications for the job - a quintessential affirmative action candidate - hired on the basis of the color of his skin and expected to learn on the job

and he's done a wonderful job

how's that gitmo closing coming along? :darwinsm:

And perhaps you forget the level of Reagan worship on the Republican side. He even had two terms (and was clearly in a lot worse shape).

There really isn't much of anyone else. Not to say Dems wouldn't like another option, I just don't see too many stepping forward.
Yes, jsut like it was in 20

Wishful thinking. You seem to forget the excitement and newness and . .gasp . . . hope that was part of 2008. There's nothing like that for her to face now. Certainly not on the Republican side.

Presidential campaigns are always unpredictable, but if things stay as they have been in the last few cycles, she will likely win.
Your historical revisionism notwithstanding, in 2006, early 2007 no one really took Obama seriously. He was just one name of many potential candidates. Hillary was the big Kahuna, preordained to be the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee. So what happened? Why did she lose to Obama? It's not like the GOP had some young charismatic presidential nominee to challenge Hillary.

History has shown time and time again Presidential campaigns are can be unpredictable. That's why conceding the presidency to Hillary today as if it is a forgone conclusion is foolish.

The Kochs aren't the only oligarchs buying elections. And all the campaigns are paid for by the wealthy elites, so that they own whomever wins. That's how they insure that the game stays rigged.

Also, regular people can't run for high office. And those who can are politicos who have long since shown themselves to be the servants of their wealthy donors. Congressman, senators, governors, these are the pool of candidates, and they are already proven servants of the rich. And even if they were not, neither party would run them. Because both parties get most of their money from the oligarchs.

The whole show runs on money. Only those who are bought and stay bought get to play a part.

By the way, the Kochs main focus has been on state and local elections, lately, where they have personal business interests. There they can buy off the politicians and necessary officials to circumvent environmental and labor laws much cheeper than they can at the federal level.
The smart oligarchs keep their names out of the press. When I started working at my current company in 1998 the name Bernard L. Schwartz was brought to my attention for the first time. He is the CEO of the parent company that owned my company. He is a life long Democrat how pours millions and millions of dollars into the Democratic Party. In the mid 1990's he was the single largest contributor to the Democratic Party. He has very close ties to the Clinton's. The joke at work was that "Ole Bernie" had Bill and Hilary on speed dial. :p

to be fair, omega's doing pretty good for a canuck

better than i managed when first exposed to the concept of prorogation

wiki said:
Prorogation is the end of a parliamentary session in the Parliament of Canada and the parliaments of its provinces and territories. It differs from a recess or adjournment, which do not end a session, and from a complete dissolution of parliament, which ends both the session and the entire parliament, requiring an election for the House of Commons in the bicameral federal parliament and the singular legislative chamber of the unicameral provincial parliaments.

In the Canadian parliamentary system, the legislature is typically prorogued upon the completion of the agenda set forth in the Speech from the Throne and remains in recess until the monarch or governor general, in the federal sphere, or lieutenant governor, in a province, summons parliamentarians. From 2008 to present, prorogation has been the subject of discussion among academics, the Canadian public, and their political representatives.

Her only political experience as an elected official is being a US Senator from New York from 2000-09. That's it unless you want to count being the first lady of Arkansas and the Presidential First Lady. :p Seriously, If Bill Clinton wasn't her husband would anyone take her seriously at all?

if the right is smart, they'll hammer her unmercifully on this:

She was at the forefront of the U.S. response to the Arab Spring

but not yet - let her get the nomination and wear down any stronger candidates first

what are the merits?

For Obama? Peace with old enemies, combatting climate change, defending the social safety net, ending the war on drugs (in progress), tackling health care (also work in progress, but significant progress has been made), bringing the undocumented out from the cold, reducing the deficit, saving the economy from impending collapse.

russia? :chuckle:

Not looking so hopeful there. We'll see.

yeah, his green supporters are really happy with his record on oil exploration :darwinsm:

etc

It's graded on a curve. They've been pushing fracking as a means to undermine Russia and Iran, which has worked fairly well as a tactical matter. I don't think that's going to break Russia's mania, but they do it with their economy significantly weakened. But the greenhouse gas, the fuel economy standards for cars, and (for different reasons) ozone regulations by the EPA, if implemented, and the agreement with China on greenhouse emissions will make a big difference. It's a lot more than any other president has done.

There are consortiums of wealthy corporate campaign donors that hide their members names and respective contributions. And use their massive wealth to manipulate the electoral processes of all the candidates; state and federal, and regardless of their party. The goal is to get the most people elected with the most favorable bias toward their own corporate agendas. But they make sure they contribute enough money to each viable candidate so that whichever candidate wins, they will have guaranteed access to them, and some control over their behavior in office.

They've been doing this for a long time, and it's been working very well for them. Which is why workers wages remain stagnant while the top 1% are getting insanely wealthy. It's why the very rich aren't paying their share of taxes, or often any taxes at all, while the country is drowning in debt. It's why we can't have universal health care like all the other modern nations of the Earth, while we pay twice as much for the lousy health care that we do have. It's why we are giving the oil companies massive tax breaks and corporate welfare while they've posted record profits for decades.

It's why the needs of the American people have been tossed aside by their own government in favor of kow-towing to the very rich, and to the corporations that the very rich own and operate.
