Your average school teacher makes about $40,000 per year.
Your average pro athlete makes over a million per year.

Nuff said.

So public teachers are overpaid. Thanks for the info. Public school teachers offer almost nothing to make the world a better place, and pro sports teams brings million to the local economy, as well as jobs.

Let me know when a teacher can hit off Pedro Martinez or Roger Clemens. Since they "perform". Baseball's 162 game season not withstanding, as long as the stadium or arena keeps filling up, then clearly they are not overpaid.

While it's quite obvious you learned little in school, there's a majority that learned at least the foundation of what they know in public schools, whether they want to admit it or not. Where did you learn to read? or write? Or start to learn maths? I benefited greatly from my public education, I'm sorry you didn't.

I don't know about where you live, but starting pay for a teacher here is $30-35K/year, considerably below average for a teacher and well below average pay for the level of education required to be a teacher.

Yes, local sports teams do contribute to the local economy, I'll not argue that, but does it outweigh the contribution a good teacher can make? Some jobs require skills and education, the world needs more than ditch diggers, burger flippers and professional athletes.

And let me know when they (who are they? I'm too lazy to do a google search) can successfully teach 142 teenagers Algebra, 5 days out of the week, 180 days/year. Or, within the same day, teach 1 course of Calculus, 1 course of Trigonometry, and 3 courses of honors level Geometry.

Better yet, let me know when either of those guys, or any other overpaid athlete, can take out a member of Al Qaeda with an M24 sniper rifle at 400m that's using a children as human shields without injuring one of the children. That was my girlfriend that made that shot, I have more respect for her for doing that than any athlete.

Are unions and revenue sharing such horrible socialist concepts if they enable competition rather than squashing it?
What makes you think unions are socialist concepts? Union are created by free will choices of workers apart from any government coercion.

Of course they're not overpaid. Anything that causes socialists to burn with the sin of envy from seeing other people more successful than they are is a good thing.

Wow you really showed me there :rolleyes:

Maybe you should have paid more attention. You still demonstrate a rather high level of idiocy. Perhaps you would have been better off in a public school? Probly not, some people are just incapable of learning past a certain level anywhere.

I come to bury equity, not to praise it;
The weight that men invest in greed lives in them,
So deeply that the good is often hidden in their bones,
So let it be with equity ... The Captains of Industry
Have told you that the equity is ambitious of your purse
And Contemptuous of your merit:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously has equity answered it ...

Here, under leave of Wall Street and the rest,
(For CEOs, bank presidents, NFL team owners are honourable;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak of equity's demise ...
It was my dream, faithful and just to me
The thought that worth and value should be two faces of the same coin:
But bankers, speculators, gamblers and brokers say it was ambitious;
And they are honourable men….CleverDan

Who's naive here? Remember the NFL takeover of the AFL? Yes, big rich companies do all kinds of fun things to avoid competition. They wouldn't pay minimum wage, they'd pay $100-$250K or whatever seems reasonable, but not a substantial portion of revenue as is the case now.

Utopian marketplace is as big a myth as is Utopian Socialism.
The NFL did not take over the AFL. The AFL merged with the NFL when it became clear that the AFL was legit competition to the NFL. The NFL approached the AFL in 1966 because it became apparent that the AFL was here to stay and signing a good number of the top college football talent.

I'm a free-market guy all the way but I have some socialist in me.
I'm a huge sports fan, and movie buff, and music fan.
Athletes are over-paid, movie stars are overpaid. The Yankees drop half a billion last year to sign 3 players, Jack Nicholson makes 61 million playing The Joker? While many poor, under-fed people out there need help and many hard-working family folks are out of work.
There's just something wrong with the picture of modern-America...

Depends on the sport. IMHO, baseball players are paid way too much money. Unlike in the NFL, where salaries are not guranteed, baseball players can have half-billion dollar contracts and not have to worry about going broke. Basketball players are the same way.

And they have to be protected by law from corporate thugs with baseball bats and shotguns. Any means necessary to protect profits.

Exactly, and the NFL needed control of college recruiting to prevent competitive bidding on talent. Whether its merging, buyout, or economic or physical thuggery, the marketplace rule is survival of the fittest.

How ironic is that? Right wingers refuse to believe in evolution, but they want a society based on it.

Ok? And? The NFL didn't force the AFL to merge. It couldn't. By 1966 the AFL was basically on par with the NFL.
