California, first state to shut down due to Covid-19, reopens today

Governor Newsom: "California is turning the page on this pandemic, thanks to swift action by the state and the work of Californians who followed public health guidelines and got vaccinated to protect themselves and their communities. With nearly 40 million vaccines administered and among the lowest case rates in the nation, we are lifting the orders that impact Californians on a day-to-day basis while remaining vigilant to protect public health and safety as the pandemic persists."

The grand reopening comes as a majority of residents have been vaccinated and as Covid-19 infections and deaths have sharply receded from a startling spike this winter.

Now, about 72% of adults and about 59% of all residents have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to CDC data. Among all 50 states, California has the third-lowest seven-day death rate per capita and the seventh-lowest seven-day infection rate per capita.

At a news conference Monday, Newsom said the reopening did not mean that efforts to stop the virus were over.

"We're not done. This is not spiking the football tomorrow. It's not mission accomplished tomorrow. This virus is not going away tomorrow. This pandemic is not behind us tomorrow. We're very mindful that already in 2021 globally more people have lost their lives to Covid than the entire year 2020," he said.

Newsom also acknowledged that the CDC's mask-wearing guidance relies on people to tell the truth about their vaccination status. "It's on the basis of trust, and that's the system that's in place nationally and it's the system that will be in place in California," he said.

That trust will be misplaced. Those who refused to wear a mask and who also refused the vaccine aren't going to now wear a mask. But as the number of people vaccinated grows, the unvaccinated may likely just circulate the virus amongst themselves.

California Leads The Nation With Lowest COVID Transmission Rate

California has the lowest coronavirus transmission rate of any state following a sharp decline in cases and hospitalizations after a summer surge.

The nation’s most populous state is the only one experiencing “substantial” coronavirus transmission, the second-highest level on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s color-coded map. So is Puerto Rico. In all other U.S. states, virus transmission is labeled as “high,” defined as 100 or more cases per 100,000 people in the last week.

California’s rate is 94 cases per 100,000. By comparison, Texas is 386 and Florida is 296.

Those who get the vaccine are not immunized from covid and in fact are just as likely to spread covid as those who are not vaccinated. Misguided hype and false propaganda are not helping America and the world deal with the covid problem.

Well, the success goes hand in hand with the morality, sanity and intelligence of the governor who is running the state. Abbott and
DeSantis are amoral idiots.

Sure, why not? And with the numbers. But keep in mind that Florida's population is nearly half of California's:

Hence the use of rates for comparison, moron
You got it, moron. Florida's covid death numbers have been consistently higher than California's throughout most of the pandemic, and yet Florida has practically half of California's population. Do you understand what those numbers mean, moron? Probably not...

Those misguided leftists who think the coronavirus vaccine immunizes people from covid and does not cause serious illnesses and deaths in too many are either stupid or stubborn.

Assuming greater rates of infections are due to differences in masking and vaccination mandates is not wise because the assumption is contradicted by data from other states and countries around the world. Mob delusion is not helping solve the covid crisis.

Florida is now equaling California's record covid deaths, but with half of California's population. I realize that the significance of that fact is totally lost on you, but a few others here may get it.
Thousands of people around the world have died from the covid vaccine and hundreds of thousands of those vaccinated have contracted covid after the vaccine. The left should stop propagating bad information, especially those facts established by clear evidence on the ground around the world.

So ... one state never closed and one state had draconian lock downs and the total outcome is roughly the same.... what should that tell you?

I know basic math is really hard for you, but I'll try it again: Florida has half the population of California, and yet Florida's current deaths from covid are now equal to California's at its highest peak. And even outside of Florida's and California's peak deaths, Florida's deaths have still rivaled California's deaths. Again, Florida has accomplished this with only half of California's population. Get it now?
