Cohen wants to Abolish the Electoral College

So, it's "overreacting" when someone who says they want to destroy another part of historical government that helps guarantee liberty is criticized for it. What did Ben Franklin say is the price of liberty? Eternal vigilance. Meaning stay awake at all times and point out every proposed move to destroy it.

As far as you're concerned Franklin was a foolish old man that didn't really understand what he was talking about. He was just paranoid to think that internal and external enemies of ours would try to destroy our liberty. Poor old doddering fool that he was he was just overreacting.
The Constitution itself allows for it to be changed. Somebody suggested changing it. so bloody what?
And guess what- the Electoral College isn't what guarantees liberty. Quite sorry. What does guarantee liberty? The Bill of Rights- which is a set of...amendments.

So the Bill of Rights guarantees liberty? And yet it can be... amended.

I guess you have no idea what straight democracies have always done. They have become tyrannies of the majority. In other words the majority will turn on the minority and absolutely destroy them. It's happened every time there was a direct vote democracy. That is why our founding fathers created a republic with an electoral college to do the voting for the presidency. They were protecting the rights of the minority political parties.

Study some history for a change and do some learning. Your ignorance is showing very clearly.

How does something that can be changed guarantee liberty?
I didn't write the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.
The Founding Fathers were smart men, and realized that things could change over time, so they allowed for changes too- in a controlled manner.

No kidding.

You're still avoiding the actual question.
How can something that can be changed guarantee anything?
Ah. I will spell it out: It does not guarantee anything forever- apparently with one exception- see below. That is the way the US Constitution is set up- like it or not.

Here is the section on amendments. I've put the one thing that can't ever be changed in bold italics.

Article V

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

Or just put the baby killers and perverts to death, and keep the nation whole.

But of course, that won't ever happen, will it...

Interesting that you include adulterers. So many Christians get all hyped up about homosexuals, and ignore that one. Maybe because it is in the Ten Commandments- unlike homosexuality.

Adultery covers homosexuality.

It's called a synechdoche.

Also, God defined marriage as being between one man and one woman, and that sex outside of marriage is wrong. That excludes homosexuality by default.

But that's not the topic of this thread.

Please do not derail the thread.

My apologies- you brought up the subject.
So, back on topic...
As you know, I am not a Trump supporter, nor do I identify with the extreme right (or the extreme left- though many try to pin me there).

I think changing the electoral system in the US, though doable, is a bad idea, at least right now. So is trying to impeach Trump- a pointless exercise that will only fan the flames in the US.

There is a tendency to say "let's change the system" when things aren't going well. But often the problem isn't the system, and a change of system won't solve a deep societal problem.
