Why George Papadopoulos' guilty plea is a much bigger problem for Trump than the Manafort indictment

1. "The Professor" only expressed interest in Papadopoulos after it became clear that he would play a role in the Trump campaign as a foreign policy advisor.

2. Papadopoulos lied about the timing of his interactions with "The Professor." Those lies were aimed at suggesting the interactions came before Papadopoulos was an adviser to the Trump campaign. But, in fact, those interactions were because Papadopoulos worked for Trump, not in spite of them

3. Papadopoulos' interactions with "The Professor" were driven by the promise of "dirt" on Clinton in the from of "thousands of emails" regarding Clinton.

4. Papadopoulos seems to have been cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation since July.
Given all of that, it's much harder for Trump and his allies to dismiss Papadopoulos than Manafort. What's more, court documents make clear he was in contact with high-ranking campaign officials about his contacts with the Russians.

This is getting ugly

The Washington Post reported back in August that Papadopoulos attempted to set up several meetings with Russia and all were rejected by Trump’s camp.

"The adviser, George Papadopoulos, offered to set up “a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss US-Russia ties under President Trump,” telling them his Russian contacts welcomed the opportunity, according to internal campaign emails read to The Washington Post.

The proposal sent a ripple of concern through campaign headquarters in Trump Tower. Campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis wrote that he thought NATO allies should be consulted before any plans were made. Another Trump adviser, retired Navy Rear Adm. Charles Kubic, cited legal concerns, including a possible violation of U.S. sanctions against Russia and of the Logan Act, which prohibits U.S. citizens from unauthorized negotiation with foreign governments."

The NY Daily News reported this in August as well:

" We need someone to communicate that DT is not doing these trips,” Manafort told his business partner Rick Gates, an account his spokesman Jason Maloni confirmed to the Daily News Monday evening."

That's great and all, and it would certainly be concerning if a meeting were accepted, but it raises the question why anyone would think it's worth suggesting. There are a lot of forms of conspiracy that wouldn't involve a face-to-face between Trump and Putin.

Golly gee whiz, those charges are from years ago and have nothing to do with the 2016 election or the campaign. What sounds familiar is the huge nothing burger Mueller is eating.

Not all of them are from years ago, but it's true that you can say they aren't related to the campaign, of the indictments. Not true of the guilty plea and confession of Papadopoulos though. He confessed, and is helping the FBI, and has been for months. Apparently, he was arrested the day after Manafort's house was raided. Gee, funny coincidence, don't you think?

Nothing on Trump.

Nothing....except proof of collusion between his campaign and Russian government officials. Whether Trump can be implicated remains to be seen, but Trump's many Tweets this weekend practically scream that he knows he's guilty.

By all means don't think about the real Russian collusion. You'll see.

You can't make this about Hillary no matter how you try.

You’re missing the real deception on the Russians Rex, I can’t believe you guys haven’t found the proof of Tribulation Trump’s meddlings. You’re so unhappy that the obvious has become obscured and I’m loving every bit of it.

There is no proof of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. All you have is a volunteer trying to make an attempt and the actual campaign brushing him off.
