So, someone who lived at a time when both the south and north american continents were unknown, as well as the size of the earth, was an idiot for thinking he had reached the far east when he finally reached landfall by heading west? Seems Columbus isn't the only idiot.

They weren't unknown. There's plenty of evidence of the explorers that beat Columbus here. And none of them said it was India.
