1 Corinthians 15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
The narrative of the entire chapter where that passage is found, is the following issue..
1 Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
In this, 1 Cor. 15:29 only ends up more complex than it need be because it is based on a doctrine unique to Paul's writings (Romans thru Philemon) that he had obviously taught the Corinthians, which is why he does not appear to explain what he means there, by his words, in 1 Cor. 15:29.
But it is based on several, interconnected doctrines taught by Paul that together form the concept he actually has in mind, there, and is merely reminding them of.
His phrase "baptized for the dead" there actually refers to living one's life FOR CHRIST; which will have been a waste of having lived out one's life in a hopeless hope, if Christ never did rise from the dead, to begin with.
He is referring to the crucified life that the Believer is BAPTIZED into, or identified with Christ in, to live out daily, FOR CHRIST, Gal. 2:20; 6: 14; Gal. 5:24; 1 Cor. 12:13; Rom. 6: 1-12, etc.
That is, that crucified life that the Believer lives out in memory of Christ's great sacrifice, but also, in gratitude to, that sure hope that Christ's death has made the Believer's and that His Resurrection has forever sealed the Believer in Christ, in, Gal. 5: 5; Titus 1:2; 3:7, etc.
Baptized for the dead refers to living that crucified life - that a person is identified with Christ in, to live out FOR Him, the moment the person believes that Christ died for one's sins.
Right then and there, the person is Baptized into or Identified with, Christ's Death, Burial, and Resurrection WITH Him.
At which point begins the Believer's crucified life FOR Christ (in gratitude to Christ's having died for one, and in gratitude also, to that sure, eternal hope that Christ's resurrection has secured for the Believer).
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 6:2 God forbid. They that are baptized for the dead refers to Believer's voluntarily dying daily FOR Christ.
Paul's point being that dying daily FOR Christ will have been in vain, if Christ never did rise again from the dead, to begin with.
He then adds further strength to his point by adding that if Christ did not rise from THE DEAD, then he and his fellow laborers have been dying daily FOR CHRIST, allowing themselves to end up facing all sorts of danger at the hands of Christ's enemies, for nothing.
Those many grave dangers that Paul and his fellow laborers had so often faced, then, were one more evidence that Christ did indeed rise from the dead!
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Now there is truth able to result in spiritual revival in one's inward man!
