This one is interesting. The lyrics were written in the early 1800s by Ernst Arndt, meant to inspire the Germans in their fight against the evil Catholic, Napoleon. Arndt was a devote Christian who wrote poetry and hymns.

"Leid ist der blanken Waffen Rost,
Die Freude hoher Seelen Kost;
Leid schleicht im Finstern wie ein Dieb,
Der Freude ist die Sonne lieb.
Drum hell den Blick und frisch die Hand!
Und schwinge Gottes Feuerbrand!
Berausche dich in edlem Wein!
Und bade dich im Sonnenschein!"
The entire poem does not translate directly into English well. Some Germans today do not even understand all of the words. It's something like this:
"Do not feel sad when your weapon rusts. Sadness is the enemy. Brighten your eyes and refresh your hand. Your true weapon is the fire of God. Drink deeply of the finest wine and bath forever in sunshine."
