School goes into lockdown after student displays Confederate flag on his backpack

A student’s display of a Confederate battle flag on his backpack eventually led to a Georgia high school going into lockdown and the suspension of three students last week.

The incident started when a 10th-grade boy arrived at Rockmart High School in Polk County with the flag attached to his backpack.

“He got dropped off out of his truck and came down the sidewalk just like any other student does,” Principal Wesley Cupp told Fox 5 News.

Eventually the student, who is white, was confronted by two black students over the flag.

“They wanted to confront him about what he had on his back pack. What did they say? ‘Hey man, why you doing that?’” Cupp said.

When words degenerated into pushing and shoving, school staff quickly broke things up, Fox 5 reported. All three students were searched and no weapons were found.

But later, when rumors surfaced that more students would be bringing Confederate battle flags to school, Cupp ordered a campus lockdown drill with students kept in class.

“We just did that as a precautionary situation to help maintain and control what could have been a bad situation,” said Cupp…
