Romans 11 and Old Covenant Israel Now As Talmudic Judaism, From the Religion of the Pharisees

The Christian Zionists say that Israel in scripture must always be physical Israel, and there cannot be an Israel of God (Galatians 6: 16), which is Israel remade (Jeremiah 18: 1-6) and that remade Israel began from the remnant of Old Covenant Israel in Romans 11: 5.

A key point in the defense and promotion of Christian Zionism is the interpretation of Romans 11: 25-26 that "...and so all Israel shall be saved" means that all Old Covenant Israel, defined by the physical bloodline from Abraham, will be saved.

But Romans 9: 6-8 says "For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7. Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed."

"Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the alter?" I Corinthians 10: 18

The question then becomes which Israel is to be saved in Romans 11: 26? Is it the children of the flesh, those of the bloodline, or is it the children of the promise? The children of the promise as remade Israel (Jeremiah 18: 1-6) would be the Israel of God in Galatians 6: 16 and in I Peter 2: 5 it would be the Israel which, as lively stones are built up, a spiritual house and a holy priesthood.

Christian Zionism does not acknowledge that there can be any Israel other than Israel of the flesh, determined by the bloodline.

Then, it has to be asked, is there in existence after the First Century A.D. an Israel of the Old Covenant which is Israel of the flesh, that is. of the physical bloodline.

Romans 11: 15-18 says ""For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16. For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17. And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18. Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee."

Christian Zionists say the firstfruits and the root is Israel, by which they mean Old Covenant Israel, and that believing Gentiles are grafted into Old Covenant Israel. Sometimes though, when this is pointed out to them, they will deny that Christian Zionism teaches that the firstfruits and root are Old Covenant Israel. The root has to be Jesus Christ.

But Old Covenant Israel as it existed in the time of Christ no longer exists now. If Gentile believers are grafted into Old Covenant Israel, then are they not grafted into Talmudic Judaism, which derives from the religion of the Pharisees?

The important question is which group of Jews are the Christian Zionists referring to as Israel in being the firstfruits and the root. Is
it now the Talmudic Jews who follow the Pharisees, or is it that very small Remnant of Jews who were faithful to God during the period Christ was on earth? Or is the root the remnant of Old Covenant Israel who accepted Christ in the First Century and began the New Covenant? Yet the root must be Jesus Christ. Apparently the Christian Zionists do not make these distinctions, and just talk about Israel, by which they mean Old Covenant Israel.

Talmudic Judaism claims to be that Israel of the flesh. But is Talmudic Judaism not derived from the religion of the Pharisees of Christ's time?

On http://www.come-and-hear.com/dilling/chapt01.html

they say "the missing link in Christian understanding on the subject of "Pharisees" is best supplied by the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia (1943): The Jewish religion as it is today traces its descent, without a break, through all the centuries, from the Pharisees. Their leading ideas and methods found expression in a literature of enormous extent, of which a very great deal is still in existence. The Talmud is the largest and most important single piece of that literature … and the study of it is essential for any real understanding of Pharisaism.

Concerning the Pharisees, the 1905 Jewish Encyclopedia says: With the destruction of the Temple (70 A.D.) the Sadducees disappeared altogether, leaving the regulation of all Jewish affairs in the hands of the Pharisees. Henceforth, Jewish life was regulated by the Pharisees; the whole history of Judaism was reconstructed from the Pharisaic point of view, and a new aspect was given to the Sanhedrin of the past. A new chain of tradition supplanted the older priestly tradition (Abot 1:1). Pharisaism shaped the character of Judaism and the life and thought of the Jew for all the future."

"Rabbi Louis Finklestein was chosen in 1937 by the Kehillas (Jewish communities) of the World as one of the top 120 Jews best representing "a lamp of Judaism" to the World...In his two-volume work "The Pharisees." Rabbi Finklestein writes: Pharasaism became Talmudism … But the spirit of the ancient Pharisee survives unaltered. When the Jew … studies the Talmud, he is actually repeating the arguments used in the Palestinian academies. From Palestine to Babylonia; from Babylonia to North Africa, Italy. Spain, France and Germany; from these to Poland. Russia and Eastern Europe generally, ancient Pharasaism has wandered."

"In Rabbi Finklestein's history of the Jews, he states: The Talmud derives its authority from the position held by the ancient academies. (i.e. Pharisee) The teachers of those academies, both of Babylonia and of Palestine. were considered the rightful successors of the older Sanhedrin . . . At the present time, the Jewish people have no living central authority comparable in status to the ancient Sanhedrins or the later academies. Therefore, any decision regarding the Jewish religion must be based on the Talmud as the final resumé of the teaching of those authorities when they existed. [page 2] (The Jews — Their History, Culture, and Religion , Vol. 4, p. 1332, Jewish Publication Society of America, 1949). "

"Note the Foreword to the first English translation of the Babylonian Talmud by the late Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, J.H. Hertz, who, like Rabbi Finklestein, was one of the 120 Jews chosen in 1937 by the Kehillas of the World as best holding up the "lamp of Judaism:" The beginnings of Talmudic literature date back to the time of the Babylonian Exile in the Sixth pre-Christian Century … When a thousand years later, the Babylonian Talmud assumed final codified form in the year 500 after the Christian era, the Roman Western Empire had ceased to be."

In Christ's time the Pharisees were the leaders of most of the Jews. At that time there were a small number of Jews who were faithful to the Lord, such as the two mentioned in Luke 2: 25 and 2: 36, Simeon and Anna, and others. These were Jews faithful to God under the Old Covenant. A different remnant of Old Covenant Israel - who might have included some of these people - came out of the Old Covenant in accepting Christ. In modern times, as the sources quoted above say, Talmudic Judaism is derived from
the religion of the Pharisees of the First Century.

Like most parents, God is capable of loving multiple children. It is not one or the other.

Pre Christ, God focused on Israel.

AD God is focusing on saving the church and Gentiles.

At Christ's return, he will focus again on saving "all" Israel.

Rom 11:26 is speaking of post 2nd coming when "all" Israel will be saved.
God has not replaced Israel with the Church. The promises apply to both.

"At Christ's return, he will focus again on saving "all" Israel.

First, who is the "Israel" in 2015 or later that is to be saved? The only group now claiming to be Old Covenant Israel is Talmudic Judaism. They must be the "all Israel" that Christian Zionists think God will save in mass as a house. Talmudic Judaism claims to be a continuation of Old Covenant Israel, but their doctrines are based upon the Talmud and the Kabbalah. Christian Zionists might then say that God will save all of "Israel," meaning all in Talmudic Judaism not because they are in that religion, but because they are of the physical bloodline. But in Galatians 3: 3, 16, 27-29 there is no more physical bloodline.

"Rom 11:26 is speaking of post 2nd coming when "all" Israel will be saved.
God has not replaced Israel with the Church. The promises apply to both."

The reformers - Luther, Calvin etc - would not agree with that, and neither would the more conservative Calvinists now. The more conservative Calvinists now, however, follow Theodore Beza in his doctrine of continuing the Catholic type Church which, with its elite clergy class, rules over the church members, contrary to I Peter 5: 2-3. There Peter says the ekklesia (church) should not rule by constraint and should not to lord it over the flock of God. The present day Christian Zionist Capital C Church is much the same as that under Calvinist Theodore Beza, lording it over the flock of God, or those who claim to be that.

Any doctrine is established by the original meaning of the Hebrew or Greek words used to express that doctrine. A translation into English should not change that doctrine. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance defines ekklesia, number 1577, as "a calling out, i.e. (to) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation..."

The word ekklesia is not in Romans Chapter 11 and is not found in the Book of Romans at all except for Chapter 16.

Christian Zionists reject the use of Romans 9: 6-8, I Corinthians 10: 18 and implications from Galatians 3 in interpreting Romans 11; 25-26. But they want to bring into Romans 11 the ekklesia translated as church. Is not that being inconsistent?

"I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:" Romans 16: 1.

"Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ." Romans 16: 5

"Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you." Romans 16: 16

The ekklesia refers to meetings of those who are born again Christians and some not yet born again but are interested. The ekklesia is the assembly or the congregation which meets regularly. Note that church, from ekklesia, is never capitalized in the Reformation period Bibles, but Israel is always capitalized. Israel is always God's people. The ekklesia is a meeting of Israel, now the Israel of God, built up as a spiritual house. It does not make any sense to say that God is now focused on saving the meeting (little c church) and the Gentiles. There is no Capital C Church in scripture. Paul's use of ekklesia in Colossians 1: 18 and 1: 24 is taken by some to support the doctrine that the Capital C Church is the Body of Christ, meaning that all who are part of the Capital C Church are of the elect of God. But be careful in assuming that Paul has there changed the doctrine of the ekklesia (church).

The Gentiles is one translation of ethnos, which is also translated as nations, and a few times as people. It can be translated as people, as in Acts 8: 9 and in Romans 10: 19..

Romans 10: 19: αλλα λεγω μη ουκ εγνω ισραηλ πρωτος μωσης λεγει εγω παραζηλωσω υμας επ ουκ εθνει επι εθνει ασυνετω παροργιω υμας

"But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you."

εθνει, εθνε are forms of ἔθνος, ethnos, meaning "a race, people, nation; the nations, heathen world, Gentiles."

Many Christian Zionists know more about the doctrines of Christian Zionism, from John Darby, C.I. Scofield and Lewis S. Chafer than they know about scripture.

The reason Gal 3:17 was written was because the idea that God was only going to work with Israel is a mistake of Judaism. Judaism did the replacing or voiding mentioned there. That's what Paul knew from his background and is seeking to correct.

Matthew 3:9.

Don't limit God's options.

Matthew 3: 9 says "And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham."

Insisting that "all Israel shall be saved" refers only to saving those of the physical bloodline from Abraham could be an opposition to the will of God. Paul has revealed something of the will of God regarding Old Covenant Israel as those in the bloodline in texts other than Romans 11: 25-26.

Once we have accepted Christ we are all Christians.

"…For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise" (Gal. 3:27-29).

And who is a Jew?

"For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God" (2:28-29).

Paul wrote that there would be a time when the number of Gentiles saved would come to an end. That there would be a time for the Jews to be saved. But, I do not believe that all in Israel who claim to be a Jew would match the above description. As I do not believe all Gentiles who claim to be Christians match the above description of them. But, only time will tell when it is time for the prophecy to be fulfilled.

If Paul was given revelation from Jesus Christ in Acts 26: 15-18, and this revelation included what Paul teaches in Romans 2: 28-29, in Romans 9: 6-8 and in Galatians 3: 3, 16, 27-29 about physical Israel of the bloodline no longer being the children of God and concerning the bloodline there is now no difference between the Greek and the Jew in Christ Jesus, then for Paul to say in Romans 11: 26 that all Old Covenant Israel of the bloodline are to be saved would be a contradiction. This does not mean than individuals of the bloodline can not come out of Old Covenant Israel, which is now Talmudic Judaism, and be saved. But be careful about the doctrines taught now by the different groups in Messianic Judaism.

In addition, Romans 11: 25 hinges to a great extent on the translation of the Greek word αχρις which is usually translated as until. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance says achris, number 891, means "until,as far as, for,in, to, until, while."

Another important word in Romans 11: 25 is fullness, or Strong's number 4138, pleroma, "repletion or completion, what fills as contents, supplement, coplousness, multitude...which is put in to fill up, fulfilling, full, fullness."

"This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come." Matthew 24: 14

Nations if from εθνεσιν, a form of ethnos. But in Romans 11: 25 ethnon, the same word, ethnos, is generally translated as Gentiles. Why? Ethnos can also mean people, as used in Acts 8: 9 and in Romans 10: 19.

In fact, in Matthew 24: 14 ethnesin could be translated as people. This Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached to all the people, and then the end shall come."

Likewise, in Romans 11: 25 "blindness in part is happened to Israel, until (while) the fullness of the people be come in."

When the Gospel of Christ is preached to all the people God intended it to be preached to, then the end comes. This is as true in Romans 11: 25 as it is in Matthew 24: 14. Blindness will continue for Old Covenant Israel as a house even to the end when all the people God intended to reach have been reached. Individuals of the bloodline could come out of the blindness to Jesus Christ and the New Covenant and be saved.

This is a pretty good summary. It is also important to know what 'houtos' is saying in v26. "In this way..." It means that from that (transitional 1st century time) on, there would be a partial hardening of Israel.

That in itself is the first problem with schemes that switch from one group to another and back. It's not done that way, because there are always exceptions that have faith.

So all of the Israel that he is referring to will be saved because it is those exception-people who have faith.

Also "saved" must be defined consistently with the Isaiah quotes. It means to have the debt of one's sins cleared up. It does not mean to live in a theocratic state, under all ceremonial and dietary law, in the geographic location of Israel, in a limited future time period. "Saved" from sin never means that. The Redeemer did come from Zion and took away sins, in the same sense as announced by John the Baptist.
