God must give you understanding which is only made possible by Him giving you New Birth.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Excellent. Their being made in the image and likeness of God is ultimately fulfilled in being conformed to the image of Christ Rom 8:29

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

In other words, the Image and Likeness of God was never a earthly, natural thing, but heavenly 1 Cor 15:49


And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

The process begins at newbirth by the Spirit 2 Cor 3:18

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.


However, for all the rest of humanity, not having been predestined unto the Adoption of Sons by Jesus Christ; or not being predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son Rom. 8:29, they were never originally in Adam when he was made in the Image and Likeness of God, but were chosen in their father the devil.
