My favorite has to do with the practice of producing meal and flour from grain. Processed meal and flour from the store was more expensive than dried corn, for example, and so those who wished to save a few pennies would buy dried corn and "crack" it themselves to make meal and flour.
I have never been offended by the word cracker, just as I have never been offended by the word redneck. Similarly I was never offended when I taught in the inner city, and the young black students would call me "ni66er" three times a day.
