I think he's referring to the visible layers being the snapshot, not the carving of the canyon. Meaning the carving, not the laying down of the sediments.

I think we're misunderstanding each other. I said that we are more merciful than God when we forgive the unrepentant, which indeed leads to more crime, pain and suffering. But that's what our society wants to do--forgive the unrepentant. Which is unloving.
