I don't really follow basketball or hockey so I can't comment. But I'd say for pure dominance of a position Justin Verlander's gotta be up there amongst active baseballers. And for football there's Tom Brady.

      Major sports you say

Football (Soccer to you un-cultured reprobates ) - Cristiano Ronaldo is probably the most all round player at the moment.

Rugby - Richie McCaw the man is just a machine.

Cricket - Hashim Amla is a run machine; but Kallis without a doubt is the most impressive and has been for the last 12 years or so.

      Snooker - Ronnie O'Sullivan

Darts - Phil 'the powerhouse' Taylor

      Bowls - Greg Harlow

I think I have covered all the major sports there.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice. Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice.

        There are only two.
        Rugby - Richie McCaw.
        Union - Richie McCaw.

Those guys are phenomenal. I heard Richie won the World Cup on one foot.

Football - Peyton Manning (he turned a crummy Denver team into a force)
Hockey - Ovechkin although he can be hot and cold.

I don't know enough about baseball or basketball to say.

Mixed Martial Arts - Anderson Silva.
            No question.

              Basketball - Lebron James

Football - Manning, if we're not counting Super Bowls. Peterson a close 2nd. Brady, if we are counting Super Bowls. Or Rodgers.

Baseball - Tough. I'll say Pujols even though he hasn't been the same since going to LA and I hesitate to take a 1st baseman

              Hockey -

              Soccer - Messi

Nobody could bend it like Beckham...in his heyday, he is still active, he appears to me to be actively avoiding the ball these days.
