  • A decades-old malaria medicine touted by the president as a coronavirus treatment showed no benefit for patients hospitalized in New York.

There was also no noticeable advantage for patients that took the drug paired with the antibiotic azithromycin, according to hotly anticipated research published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    • Hydroxychloroquine Fails to Help Coronavirus Patients in Largest Study of the Drug to Date

In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists led by a team at Columbia University found that people infected with COVID-19 taking hydroxychloroquine do not fare better than those not receiving the drug.

The study published Thursday is the largest to date to investigate the drug, which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat malaria and certain autoimmune disorders, as a treatment for COVID-19. Dr. Neil Schluger, chief of the division of pulmonary, allergy and critical care medicine at Columbia, and his team studied more than 1,300 patients admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Irving Medical Center for COVID-19. Some received hydroxychloroquine on an off-label basis, a practice that allows doctors to prescribe a drug that has been approved for one disease to treat another — in this case, COVID-19. About 60% of the patients received hydroxychloroquine for about five days. They did not show any lower rate of needing ventilators or a lower risk of dying during the study period compared to people not getting the drug.

That's odd, I've seen the reverse; for example: Second wave of COVID-19 cases sweeps Senegal's holy city

TOUBA, Senegal (Reuters) - Senegal’s holy city of Touba is fighting a second wave of COVID-19 infections, dashing hopes that swift action by authorities had stopped the new coronavirus from spreading in the one-time epicentre. Confirmed cases in Touba have risen seven-fold to more than 190 since a market trader fell ill in April, ending a two-week lull in new cases. Now, as other countries in West Africa, including Nigeria and Ghana, are beginning to ease lockdowns to assist those whose livelihoods were disrupted, Senegal is tightening restrictions to try to contain the outbreak. “Perhaps it’s ignorance or even some denial of the disease,” said Sylla Mbacke, head doctor at Touba’s main health centre, Darou Marnane. “There are some that don’t believe in it at all.”

        • French Doctor Didier Raoult Cites ‘Scientific Misconduct’ in Recent VA Study on Hydroxychloroquine; Two Major Flaws

The Veterans Health Administration released the results of a study on the efficacy of the drug hydroxychloroquine on patients being treated for COVID-19. The study was funded by grants from the National Institute of Health and the University of Virginia. Researchers found that not only did the drug show no benefit, it may have actually caused harm. Study results can be viewed in the medRxiv online depository.

Researchers included data from 368 COVID-19 patients. 97 were treated with hydroxychloroquine, 113 were administered a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin and 158 received “standard supportive management” for COVID-19. Here’s what they found:
The two primary outcomes analyzed in the study were death and the need for ventilation.

About 28 percent who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11 percent of those getting routine care alone.

About 22 percent of those getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the difference between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could have affected survival.

Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either.

The researchers said, “In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalized with Covid-19. An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone. These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs.”

Researchers did not track side effects but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.

This was not a peer-reviewed study.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a statement by email to Fox News which read, “This was not a clinical trial. It is simply an analysis of retrospective data regarding hospitalized patients. The findings should not be viewed as definitive because the analysis doesn’t adjust for patients’ clinical status and showed that hydroxychloroquine alone was provided to VA’s sickest COVID-19 patients, many times as a last resort.”

Sounds pretty grim considering the promising results we’ve seen from other studies.

As you would expect, the mainstream media was thrilled with the bad news about the drug that President Trump has been touting.

One of the studies that showed positive results was conducted by French Dr. Didier Raoult. His study included 1,061 patients who were treated with a combination of
hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin and demonstrated 91% effectiveness with zero side effects.

Upon hearing the surprising results of the VA study, Dr. Raoult reviewed their findings and discovered several glaring instances of “scientific misconduct.” Fox News’ Laura Ingraham reported on Raoult’s response on her program Wednesday night. (Video of this segment is at the bottom of the page.)

Ingraham read about the first problem from Raoult’s response, “In the current period, it seems that passion dominates rigorous and balanced scientific analysis and may lead to scientific misconduct and this article [VA findings] is an absolutely spectacular example of this. The analysis of the data shows two major biases…Lymphopenia is twice as common in the HCQ groups as the non-HCQ group and there is an absolute correlation between lymphopenia and fatality rate, which is well known.”

One of the major problems Raoult found was that the HQC and the HQC/Zpak were given after the patients had been intubated. “This is unreasonable at the time of the cytokine storm [after patient is critically ill], as it is unlikely that HCQ alone would be able to control patients at this stage of the disease.”
The rest of the article can be read here.

Imagine that. Actual scientific fraud by the opponents of HCQ. It has a very familiar ring to what the media has been doing to oppose the use of the HCQ regimens.

Oh, what a huge wave of new infections. They now have a total of 190 cases in a city of 529,000+. That's a total of .0359 % of the population of Touba. What a surge. Don't you understand what you're reading? The article shows just how misleading the headline is when it gets down to the reality of the numbers.

When I posted on Senegal they had 1885 reported cases. They now have 2105 cases. That's the massive increase of 220 cases in a population of 16+ million people. That's .00132% of the population. And they have reported all of 2 new deaths since then. Yeah, the coronavirus is just sweeping Senegal away. For a third world country they are proving just how effective their low budget health care program is, and the heart of it is chloroquine and azithromycin.

Do you actually understand the mortality rate they have in Senegal from the coronavirus? It's .0001259% of the total population. That number is so small it's statistically non-existent. You have to multiply it by 10,000 to reach 1.259%.

Yes I do, and the key to their success has been nipping the problem in the bud before it gets out of control. Unlike here.

Of course, It could also be that their health care system is so much better than ours.

              • Here is a video on how the cholorquine and zinc treatment regimen works. It's the science behind the treatment.

LOL. Yeah, it is. It is because they don't politicize their health care like the Democrats are doing. The Senagalese use what works, not what some politicians decide should be used because it makes their masters wealthy. And, not coincidentally, allows them to dip their fingers in the river of corruption flowing through Washington D.C.. Look at the science behind the HCQ and zinc treatment to see why it works. Something that cheap and well-known doesn't allow politicians and bureaucrats to make millions off of it. It's the old saw about following the money when it comes to corruption. They would rather see a massive revenue stream for themselves than see healthy people. That doesn't follow their narrative of attempting to make Trump look evil or stupid. They would much rather see people die than see Trump actually benefiting the little guy.

                  Trump cares. They do not.

The study involving 96,000 patients and published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Lancet found that using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine was linked to increased rates of mortality and heart rhythm complications among hospitalized Covid-19 patients.
