Sometimes people just assume "modern art" is all about some indistinct squiggles and the like or that it doesn't fit in with their comfortable ideals of landscapes or whatever. Gets tiresome.

I don't consider this to be modern art. I don't care if it was created this morning.

It doesn't matter what you "consider" it to be. This is photorealism and isn't part of the renaissance or baroque period of art any more than a Handel piece can be construed as being contemporary classical music in the present. Now you could argue that there is great artistic skill in the portraits of Holbein etc as there is with this but art isn't defined by your subjective parameters.

By the time most of us think something is "modern art"... it isn't.

Mostly, what most people think of as modern art (abstract experssionism) is really old...

Abstract expressionism is a post–World War IIart movement in American painting, developed in New York in the 1940s.
Although the term "abstract expressionism" was first applied to American art in 1946 by the art critic
Robert Coates, it had been first used in Germany in 1919 in the magazine Der Sturm, regarding German Expressionism. In the United States, Alfred Barr was the first to use this term in 1929 in relation to works by Wassily Kandinsky
