I think TH can speak for himself on this and I understood his assertion but, the regional interests are an ideology in this case, it isn't business vs farmer it is constitutional republic vs socialistic democracy which this nation isn't.

Unless you can tie the ideologies in play to the regions then they aren't regional interests. I think there could be some ideas behind that, but I haven't seen you make that case. You say birds of a feather flock together but why does it matter where the birds are flocking to? It might even be true that flocking together matters more in an EC system because then flocks can tip states in their favor to increase their electoral votes. Under a national popular vote then the country could be politically segregated and it wouldn't matter. What would matter is the voting preference of each individual person.

Why not? For those who fear the effects of regional distortion, to the extent it exists, the Senate is a natural check on the House. The presidency, however, wasn't invented to do that. And because a president needs a wider support than any congressman, he cannot afford to be regionally divisive.
