only if you think religion is a very important part of your life
How does the importance of religion translate into a broad knowledge of most mainstream religions? What if you're a good Catholic kid who's satisfied with the answers he's found and you're more interested in other things than in, say, the Koran or Upanishads.

most think it is
but
there I go again siding with the majority
You think most people who believe religion is very important also have a broad understanding of the principle, differing religious expressions?

happy to see everyone having fun here
but
let's take a close look at the last two posters
freelight can't get enough knowledge
but
you won't see him nailing anything down
whenever he finds something new and exciting
he throws away anything that might get in the way of it

freelight had some good things to say about words and labels, and I hope you gave them some thought.

zoo doesn't want to know anything
but
gets his kicks out of mocking those who think they know
and
he works real hard at that
if he worked that hard on building his own body of knowledge
he might experience some peace of mind
you know the kind we pretend to have
zoo shines a light on hypocrisy and I don't think you like that too much. I hope you give that some thought too.

And he knows a lot and sees a lot - and plenty enough of both to make you uncomfortable.

when I learned I would be teaching religion against my will
this person would not take no for an answer
I started doing research on other religions thinking it was important
so
I emailed a teacher if history of religion was important
her answer was you have to know religion to understand history

I start out every morning that way
but
the negativity here a tol has a way of dragging you down
Other people's?

I always recover but it does help to get out of town every now and then
I think that's darn clever. You should probably try to work it into any conversation you have. Even with people away from here. They won't appreciate how clever you're being but even so.

freelight, zoo, and I have no problem taking cheap shots at each other
but
go ahead and defend them as well
if
you have to

I think it likely depends on the period and place, but in a broad sense, sure. But we weren't talking about understanding history, were we.

We were speaking about whether people who found religion important had to find other religions important enough to be familiar with them. I gave you an example of a good Catholic in HS who finds his religious passion sated fully by the Church. I get the impression from your moving the goal posts that you might not be comfortable with your own answer.

Since this is about programming we've encountered as we were raised, and "where we're coming from," we ought to label people here by race. That definitely has a lot to do with the way a child is brought up, and programming.

Also, we probably ought to label folks by their parent's sins. That sort of programming can be subtle but very powerful in making us who we are, and will let people know "where we're coming from."

Anyone here with an alcoholic parent? Check the checkbox. Beaten or molested as a child? How severely? Have you gotten counseling for it? Just trying to find the proper labels. Where you're coming from. Were your parents divorced? Did your dad have a stash of porn in his closet? Please 'fess up. I mean, there's a big difference between a Catholic family upbringing and a Catholic family upbringing where your dad beat your mom everyday after church. So please check the checkbox. This way, we'll much better understand one another.

Childhood programming is a powerful thing... the effects, for good or for bad, shape a person and a life.

If only parents realized what awesome power they wield, and how being controlling isn't the same as being a good parent.

A parent who's controlling usually doesn't recognize it in himself I don't think. He sees it as exercising authority or following tradition, this is the way it's always been done; any disagreement is seen as a challenge to authority, challenge to tradition - there's no room for seeing and hearing the child as his or her own person with ideas and questions that may not match what the parent wants to hear, so the parent shuts the child down and the child learns not to defy authority. Good child. Bad parenting.

Eh, I think you just like women to be quiet and docile and know their place.
So you're saying he's never been married?

Also, I think that height should be included in any serious inquiry into character. Short people...round here and whatnot. :upright:

You know Chrysostom, I've never given you any grief over for your personal religious beliefs. You complain about people doing that to you all the time. Yet you take insulting shots at me for being agnostic all you want to.

And you know, I'd spoken very specifically to "not knowing " and what that was like for me. I put a lot into talking about it. But I know you never bothered reading it. You'd rather just be a hypocritical old curmudgeon, complaining about how you're persecuted, feet dug in against anything that doesn't sit right with you like a cat being dragged to a bath, and never giving anyone who disagrees with you any real attention, let alone credit. That's your job.

Any chance of adding jumping into a lake as part of your ever expanding job description?

You mean another way to sort us all out. :plain:

You know, I've learned something over the progression of this thread... at first I was thinking, okay great, it'll be interesting to see what people have to say about themselves. But then as it went on I realized it wasn't about people expressing what they believe so much as it being what one person wants to say about everyone else.

So no personal expressions of belief from a lot of people, only one controlling person trying to force labels on people that they don't want to wear, and that hits a really strong personal note in me.

Shoot. I changed it while you were writing this...so there goes a half hour of your life you won't be getting back.

Just so. And foot size. People with tiny feet and hands are a sneaky bunch. Carney folk like.

I'd say "Bingo!" but you're Catholic so the chances are you'd have a positive association.

How else is he going to "expose" people? :noid:

:nono: No bingo for me. See how that labeling backfires?

Hey, getting a fog index that isn't going to confuse a few people takes a little work for some of us (crosses fingers chrys can understand this so everyone else can).

:nono: No bingo for me.
You've said that more than a few times in your life, haven't you. :plain:

Shhhh.... pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...
Or the behind that mans the curtain...
