I occasionally watch a nature program. I occasionally watch "South Park" or "How Clean is Your House?" But I'm not really into TV. If it weren't for my roommate, we wouldn't have cable and the TV would be for DVDs and videos. Before I moved to Ohio, I went over a year without turning my TV on. Didn't plan it. It just worked out that way.

South Park!

[Our boys love that show!]

American chopper is cool. Is that dad ever happy?
Having spoken to them personally on the phone, the impression I get is that he's never happy. They seem to be the same talking about something silly like shipping options as they are on the show - always dramatic.

I think ESPN just won the contract for Monday Night Football.
I sure hope the free Dish programming I'll get (employee benefit) comes with ESPN.

There are only a couple of shows I make a point of watching, and I'm sure I could live without them. I used to like documentaries and information shows, but I don't have cable and even PBS has fallen into the more commercial nonsense, lately. TV could be a fantastic cultural tool, but unfortunately American culture is only about greed, and so everythng on TV is about making money, instead of adding cultural value to our lives.
:darwinsm: I never thought of television as a "noblesse oblige" medium.

Without any particularly noble motives, I watch 24, Enterprise, whatever is entertaining. PBS has some informative shows which don't feature commiunist/socialist politics (i.e., fantastic cultural tool) as the backdrop.

I would watch more TV if there were more worth while things to watch. I watch American Idol and 24 and both of these are really going down hill. I try to get into other shows but I just can't. Most shows are either vulgar or just plain stupid. I cannot handle stupid. I can't even remember the last time I watched a funny sitcom. The writing today is so pathetic. I'd rather watch Andy Griffith any day. Now that's funny!
The good sitcoms ended with Seinfeld. Andy Griffeth is great, All in the Family is great stuff, Happy Days is good, and most in the 80s although there was the beginning of a decline.... Old school Cosby show was great, Different World, Who's the Boss, Head of the Class, Perfect Strangers....all good shows. But now everything's about gay people. Nearly every single show forces me to watch plots dealing with homosexuality or some other kind of sex overload and I don't go for that.

I got positive rep for having a video membership. How cool is that?

Video membership rocks. It's a great idea. I drop way too much money in Blockbuster without it, and now I don't have to buy so many movies.

But yesterday I went to Best Buy and could not leave empty handed, so I picked up
2001 A Space Odyssey
2010 The Year We Make Contact

Some good science fiction from the great mind of Arthur C. Clarke

I don't think it is inherently a bad thing. Most of the programs are not worth wasting our time watching.

We don't watch with a purpose other than to escape. So much wasted time that could be put to better use...like posting to forums online.

I'm waiting for the day I can just have A&E and The History Channel piped straight through cable to my PC :)

I would think it's possible to do that now. Just a matter of getting the right hardware and software. Capture cards and such. I'm still trying to figure that stuff out.
