Uber Conservative Talk Show Host Proposes Slavery for Illegal Immigrants

A conservative radio talk show host in Iowa wants to turn undocumented immigrants into "property of the state" and forced into labor.

"Put up a sign that says at the end of 60 days, if you are not here with our permission, can't prove your legal status, you become property of the state," Jan Mickelson said during his show on Monday. "And then we start to extort or exploit or indenture your labor."

When a caller said "it sounds an awful lot like slavery," Mickelson asked: "Well, what's wrong with slavery?"

Mickelson said the undocumented immigrants could be housed in tents, similar to the "Tent City Jail" set up by Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"Put up a tent village, we feed and water these new assets, we give them minimal shelter, minimal nutrition, and offer them the opportunity to work for the benefit of the taxpayers of the state of Iowa," Mickelson said. "All they have to do to avoid servitude is to leave."

In another excerpt posted by Media Matters, he also suggested that the "slaves" could be forced to build a wall across the Mexican border:

"We say, 'Hey, we're not going to make Mexico pay for the wall, we're going to invite the illegal Mexicans and illegal aliens to build it. If you have come across the border illegally, again give them another 60-day guideline, you need to go home and leave this jurisdiction, and if you don't you become property of the United States, and guess what? You will be building a wall. We will compel your labor. You would belong to these United States. You show up without an invitation, you get to be an asset. You get to be a construction worker. Cool!'"

Mickelson also insisted his proposal was serious.

"You think I'm just pulling your leg," he told the caller. "I am not."

Excellent idea! Then some may bot choose to come into the US. Those who do are will be total assets, right? Good idea?

We should NOT make it easy if they are here illegally. The laws should be written in favor of them returning to their country of origin as the preferred course of action.

But slavery... not a chance... some people in this country are idiots and need to be called out for it.

I do agree that setting up a camp on the border and making sure they have minimal food, water and shelter to the point where they can barely survive would make them want to return home..

Even though I truly hate any and all examples of Godwin's Law, this is literally Nazi-esque.
The first step taken by the party against the Jews in their Final Solution was to remove their citizenship, and by such action create a stateless underclass designed to exist in perpetuity under the oppressive heel of the government without any rights or representation.
Which would, combined with their propaganda war, lead naturally to the public treating the stateless underclass as less than human, and thus not object to any atrocities committed against them.

Which is precisely what the Republicans who support ending birthright citizenship are advocating.

This idiot Mickelson is just trying it from a different angle.
Instead of advocating the repeal of the 14th Amendment, he's advocating the repeal of the 13th.
Which would treat human beings as less than human, bring back a system which took centuries to finally squelch (and which is now condemned by every major nation on Earth), and ideologically send us back to the Stone Age.
