Would the following statement agree with your faith?

"This above all: to thine own self be true,
and it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."

"To thine own self be true" means, be honest with yourself. Do you hold to any false doctrines?

"self" is just another name for "ego" (or "flesh", etc.).
Satan became obsessed with his "self" and became an egomaniac (the first one).
The "ego" must die in order to be saved, and the "ego" must be dethroned
for the Holy Spirit to have control and give you guidance, understanding, and wisdom.

Here is a modern text translation of the full statement from Hamlet:
Source http://nfs.sparknotes.com/hamlet/page_44.html

Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act. Be thou familiar but by no means vulgar. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel, But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatched, unfledged comrade. Beware Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in, Bear ’t that th' opposèd may beware of thee. Give every man thy ear but few thy voice. Take each man’s censure but reserve thy judgment. Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, But not expressed in fancy—rich, not gaudy, For the apparel oft proclaims the man, And they in France of the best rank and station Are of a most select and generous chief in that. Neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Don’t say what you’re thinking, and don’t be too quick to act on what you think. Be friendly to people but don’t overdo it. Once you’ve tested out your friends and found them trustworthy, hold onto them. But don’t waste your time shaking hands with every new guy you meet. Don’t be quick to pick a fight, but once you’re in one, hold your own. Listen to many people, but talk to few. Hear everyone’s opinion, but reserve your judgment. Spend all you can afford on clothes, but make sure they’re quality, not flashy, since clothes make the man—which is doubly true in France. Don’t borrow money and don’t lend it, since when you lend to a friend, you often lose the friendship as well as the money, and borrowing turns a person into a spendthrift. And, above all, be true to yourself. Then you won’t be false to anybody else.

How is it not lying to yourself if you tell yourself that it is okay for you to do those actions?
Some don't see anything wrong with it but think it's natural (ie. their natural desire), and think that to deny themselves of their natural desires would be lying to themselves.

They are lying to themselves that their desires are natural and that they do not need to deny themselves of their unnatural desires.

So a homo should stay in the closet and not reveal his desires or act on them?
Is the homo being truth to himself by trying to hide it?

Should a person act upon his desires to commit adultery or suppress it?
Should a person act upon his desires to commit murder or suppress it?
Should a person act upon his desires to commit theft or suppress it?

Should a person say acting upon his sinful desires is being true to himself, or should a person tell himself the truth that acting upon his sinful desires is wrong?

That's the question.
Does being true to YOURSELF (not others) mean you should hide and/or deny YOUR desires?

How is it lying to yourself if you truly desire to do those actions?

Whatsoever things are true...think on those things (Phil 4:8). Would you say pedophilia, homosexuality, murder, rape, are things we should think on? If not, then do they count as true?

I would say that being true to yourself involves telling yourself the truth. And if those things are not good for you, if they will keep you from the kingdom of heaven (1 Cor 6:9-10), then it is lying to yourself to say you ARE those things, that it is part of your person to do those things. You can't seriously believe God created you to do those things, and to suggest so is lying to yourself.

I don't think the statement was about being true to GOD (or anyone else), but being true to yourself.

I don't think the statement was about being true to GOD (or anyone else), but being true to yourself.

But what does it mean to be true to oneself? Surely it can't mean, "Do whatever you feel like doing." Even though the statement was from Shakespeare, and not to be taken as an immortal piece of wisdom, it had some meaning to Shakespeare that suggested it would do more than help one enjoy life, but would overflow from self-help to others-help, because it ends with "Thou canst not then be false to any man."

And the soliloquy begins with instruction NOT to speak or act out what is in your thoughts: "Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act." Being true to one's self MUST then be the opposite of just doing what one pleases, as the whole passage expresses, but is instead an exhortation to self-control.

Isn't that what we do when we mortify the flesh and submit ourselves to God? "[Rom 8:13 KJV] For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live." Isn't that why "self-control" is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23)?

Being true to God, in its broadest and most narrow senses, is being true to one's self.

1 John 1:6
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

If you walk in darkness, you do not the truth, therefore you are not being true to yourself.

Psalm 36:1-4
1 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
2 For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.
3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.
4 He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

There is no truth in a person like that, so there is no way for that kind of person to be true to himself.

If a person is true to his/her self, s/he will be a full blown hedonist and narcissist.

It doesn't say be true to truth, it says be true to YOURSELF.
