The apostle Paul consistently identifies his ministry as unique in its commission, message, and audience. Rather than continuing the ministry of the twelve apostles to the nation of Israel, Paul presents himself as receiving a distinct dispensation directly from the risen, ascended Jesus Christ.
1. A Distinct Commission to the Gentiles
Paul repeatedly identifies himself as the specific apostle sent to the Gentiles, establishing an office distinct from the twelve who ministered to the circumcision.
- Apostle of the Gentiles: In Romans 11:13, he writes, "For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office."
- Division of labor: In Galatians 2:7–9, Paul notes that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto him, just as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter. The leaders in Jerusalem agreed that James, Cephas, and John would go unto the circumcision, while Paul and Barnabas would go unto the heathen.
- Teacher of faith and verity: In 1 Timothy 2:7, he states, "Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not
a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity."
2. The Dispensation of Grace and the Mystery
Paul describes his message not as the fulfillment of prophecy spoken since the world began, but as a direct revelation kept secret until committed to him.
| Characteristic | Scriptural Reference | Description |
| Direct Revelation | Galatians 1:11–12 | "I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ." |
| A Specific Dispensation | Ephesians 3:1–3 | "If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery..." |
| Kept Secret Since the World Began | Romans 16:25 | "Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began." |
| The Mystery of Christ | Colossians 1:25–26 | To fulfill the word of God, "Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints." |
3. The Core Message: "My Gospel" and Pure Grace
Because the message was committed directly to him for this dispensation, Paul refers to it possessively as
"my gospel" (Romans 2:16, Romans 16:25, 2 Timothy 2:8).
- The preaching of the cross: Rather than presenting the cross solely as a crime committed by Israel (as in the early chapters of Acts), Paul preaches the cross as good news and the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).
- Justification by faith alone without works: Paul establishes that righteousness comes apart from the deeds of the law. Romans 4:5 declares, "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." In Ephesians 2:8–9, salvation is wholly by grace through faith, not of works.
- The Body of Christ: Paul reveals a new creation where the middle wall of partition between Jew and Gentile is broken down, reconciling both unto God in one body by the cross (Ephesians 2:14–16, 1 Corinthians 12:13).
4. The Masterbuilder and Pattern
Paul defines his operational role not merely as one among many preachers, but as the foundational architect for the current administration of God.
- A Masterbuilder: In 1 Corinthians 3:10, he states, "According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon."
- A Pattern for Believers: In 1 Timothy 1:15–16, Paul explains why he obtained mercy: "that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting."
- An Example to Follow: In 1 Corinthians 11:1 and Philippians 3:17, he instructs believers to follow him as he follows Christ, because his epistles provide the explicit doctrine, walk, and order for the Church, the Body of Christ.
