The day India was saved
Then newly Independent India was burning to ashes in communal riots. The riots between majority Hindus and previous ruler martial Muslims were disintegrating the country. England, the creator of new India was gone. The new inexperienced leaders could do little except sending police and troops. But they were biased, ill-equipped and outnumbered. So the situation was going out of hand more and more every day. The world saw that the new nation was perishing.
Then our family had just arrived safely in our uncle’s house, escaping from the marauding Muslims in our homeland East Bengal. Mainly due to Gandhi’s presence there we were saved. But he had to rush to riot racked Delhi after that. The only protection Indians had then was popular Gandhi’s frantic attempt to preach peace and communal love. He ran from one bloody area to another bloody area. When he was present in a riot spot, murder and loot stopped for the time being due to his popularity and love message. He never cared for any personal security except God, the unity of good. But he had to leave to quell urgent fires other far spots. The communal Sikh, Hindu and Muslim fanatics were becoming more mortal enemy to each other as riots escalated.
On 31th January 1948 morning we had heard the news that Gandhi was killed on previous day evening. That time we had no radio. Immediately we became fearful that there is no one to save us now. Cries and lamentations were heard all around. But we didn’t realize then that his self-sacrifice has saved us better than presence.
There were many attempts on his lives. Fanatical Hindus hated him for his hindering their revenge on Muslims who started attacks on Hindus first. Muslims knew that they conquered and ruled India not due to their numbers but due to their regimented ferocity. So they again used it. Hindus also feared that, deeply divided they lacked that regimented unity. So they had invited the British in the past and cooperated to get unified by them and freed of the yoke of Muslims.
But now Muslims were gaining and Gandhi was resisting Hindus’ reprisals. They were blind to see that their hate inspiring degrading violence is the greatest enemy disintegrating already divided them and drawing them to eternal hell of soul disintegration. India was on the way to become hell.
But the fanatics shot acted very differently than they thought. On the day Gandhi was assassinated all riots stopped permanently as Gandhi’s numerous disciples were shocked to action against riots. Such deeply was he loved that there are records of thirty people instantly dying of shock hearing that news. Millions of Gandhi followers observed sharddha fasting and abstinence ceremony for one month as they do in case of parents. They vowed to sacrifice themselves like Bapu (father as Gandhi is called) to stop riots. So riots were stopped by their death-defying nonviolent tactics and India was saved. For that Gandhi’s blood India is surviving against the constant communal provocations of Pakistan, Hindu and Islamic fanatics.
So Martin Luther king Jr, said “Christ gave us the goals and Mahatma Gandhi the tactics” to save us. Not only India many others are saved too by his tactics.
