Recent English Bibles Avoid Use of Remnant in Revelation 11: 13 and Revelation 12: 17

Tyndale New Testament of 1526 for Revelation 11: 13:

"And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earth quake were slain names of men seven and the remnant were feared and gave glory to God of heaven.

Tyndale New Testament for Revelation 12: 17:

"And the dragon was wroth with the woman: and went and made war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."

1599 Geneva Bible for Revelation 11: 13: "And the same hour shall there be a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city shall fall, and in the earthquake shall be slain in number seven thousand: and the remnant were sore feared, and gave glory to God of heaven."

1599 Geneva Bible for Revelation 12: 17: "Then the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went and made war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."

The King James Version for Revelation 11: 13 and Revelation 12: 17 have much the same wordings as do the Tyndale and Geneva New Testaments. In fact, there is a great deal of agreement between the King James Version and the two earlier English Reformation era Bibles.

The recent Bible versions generally avoid translating λοιποι as remnant in Revelation 11: 13 and Revelation 12: 17.

New King James Version for Revelation 11: 13: "In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven."

New King James Version for Revelation 12: 17: "And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."

The New International Version for Revelation 11: 13 has survivors instead of remnant as in the Tyndale, Geneva and King James Bibles. The King James Version for Revelation 11: 13 says the remnant were affrighted. And for Revelation 12: 17 the New International Version has
the rest of her offspring rather than the remnant of her seed as in the Tyndale New Testament.

William Tyndale used remnant in both Revelation 11: 13 and Revelation 12: 17, followed by the Geneva Bible and the King James Version.

But the New International Version for Romans 11: 5 says "So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace." Remnant is from λειμμα, or leimma. See: http://biblehub.com/greek/3005.htm......

The Catholic Latin Vulgate New Testament for the Greek word loipoi in Revelation 11: 13 is translated as the Latin word reliqui.

"relinquo, to leave behind, not take along, not stay with, leave, move away from, quit, abandon." Then for the Greek word loipon in Revelation 12: 17, the Catholic Latin Vulgate again has reliquis de semine or those "left behind" of her seed.

Like the recent English translations of the New Testament, the Catholic Bible does not acknowledge the presence of the remnant of Israel in the sense in which remnant is used in Romans 11: 5 in Revelation 11:13 and in Revelation 12: 17. In Romans 11: 5 the remnant is a small group who are the elect by grace and who continue God's plan of redemption at a time when the multitude has departed from God's plan for redemption. The three English Bibles created during the period of the Reformation do use remnant for Revelation 11: 13 and Revelation 12: 17

Could it be that the absence of the word remnant, with the meaning used in Romans 11: 5 in the Catholic and recent "Protestant" English translations correlates with a belief among Catholics and recent Protestants that there is to be no remnant of the Capital C Church during the Church age. The Christian Zionists do not acknowledge that there is a present day remnant and see the 144,000 as being made up only of people of the physical bloodline of Old Covenant Israel.

It is true that there is no remnant of the church in scripture, only a remnant of Israel (for example in Zephaniah 2: 12-13). But in the church age the remnant of Israel is of the Israel of God (Galatians 6:16), not of Old Covenant physical Israel by the bloodline.
