Racisim Today

My daughter and I got into a discussion regarding racism. She got angry to the point of tears. I am a SIS gendered fiscally conservative socially moderate white Christian male. She is 19 and very liberal. Interestingly, we are very close on what we want to see happen with "race relations." Where we diverge greatly is on the meaning of racism. She believes that reverse racialism is not possible. I thing it does. I tend toward the Oxford Dictionary definition:

She tends towards a different definition that I found on Wikipedia

Wikipedia Discussion

Her view and the view of most liberal people today is that reverse racism is not possible because the "Black Race" lacks the power to oppress the "White Race" therefore reverse racism is not possible. My argument is that if a person "hates" another person based solely on the color of their skin, they are racist. The problem that I see is that if we as individuals never stop to honestly examine why dislike somebody then we can never reach a point where we can sit down and have an open and honest discussion with them and that will prevent this nation of ours from moving past our deeply racist history.

This thread is to discuss racism. What is racism? Are the many various definitions given in the Wiki link to broad?

If you want to see an example of racism today just look at the following tweets of Sarah Jeong, who was just hired by the New York Times:

"Are white people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like groveling goblins."

"Oh man it's kind of sick how much joy I get out of being cruel to old white men."

“White people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs ******* on fire hydrants,”

Of course the liberals and members of the lawless party defend her!

Your daughter is channeling her inner humpty-dumpty

It has been said that those who are not liberal when they are young have no heart and those that are not conservative when they are older have no brain. She is fine where she is. She has much life experience to gain. She is only in her second year of college.

Oxford Dictionary definition:

racism
  1. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

Based on this definition, reverse racism is not racism.

Reverse racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that the other person's race is superior.

Of course, this leads to another problem:
White liberal racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of your own race based on the belief that your own race is superior.

What if a non-white person believes that their own race is superior? Does that change things?

Is that person discriminating against their own race because they believe their own race is superior?
I have only heard of that happening due to White liberal racism.

Note that the definition is based on the belief that ones own race is superior. It is possible for a person in a race that has been oppressed to believe that their race is superior and then feel hatred for another race based on that belief.

Is there any race that has not been oppressed by another race at least once in history?

to believe that their race is superior and then feel hatred for another race based on that belief.
Antagonism (hatred) towards another race based on the belief that one's own race is superior is the definition of racism.

Racism
racism and racial discrimination are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial.

Now we have a problem.

It is very difficult to establish whether one race is superior to another race.
It is easier to establish whether one culture is superior to another culture.

I'm not sure that it easy to say one culture is superior to another. What is superior is largely a matter of opinion.

There are no races.
Let us look at animals for a moment. Horses have different breeds. Cobs, Morgan's, Arabian, Quarter, Gypsy Vanner and so on. The differences are determined by physical and temprement characteristics.

When we look at humans, there are physical differences that can be grouped together. We call them races. Is there a better term we could use?

Nationalities, cultures, geographical background...

Regarding physical generalities, it would be fine to classify according to them in a world where doing so did not degrade some groups.

The correlating view when it comes to animals is that physical differences do not justify the term speciation.
