The generation from Christ to the destruction of Jerusalem (DofJ) was decisive. The end of an age was at hand--that of the role of Judaism, determined by God. But there would be an attempt to fight back against this determination. That was the zealot rebellion, which believed there would be divine help to overthrow Rome and believed in the military use of the temple grounds as a fortress. Their struggle was flesh and blood.
Christ and the apostles declared the finality several times:
1, Mt 23. The house (institution) is left desolate. This is spoken in advance of the events of the DofJ but is no less decisive, because God's work was now going be done another way.
2, Lk 21. The DofJ is 'the time of wrath in fulfillment of all that is written.' On this passage, we would have to go back to the many passages after the exile and return of the 5th century BC, to see where (another) destruction of Israel was mentioned. This is it. They are not necessarily in the prophets; the NT says some of them are in Moses, which would mean they did not apply to what happened in the 8th century BC. Acts 3:23 for that. Dan 9 for one during the exile.
3, Lk 23. The generation which were infants at the time of the crucifixion would go through the trauma of the DofJ. There is no adjusting such a statement. While 'blessed are the wombs that never bore' sounds like late chapters in Deuteronomy, 'they will call to the mountains "Fall on us" is Hos 10:8. Some will also recognize this in the Rev, which means the Rev is about the DofJ, obviously.
4, I Thess 2:16. They always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them. Like Mt 23, it declares this in well advance of the event.
5, Heb 6:7,8 is reminiscent of the seed and farmer parables. But ch 6 is a pointed passage to Jewish Christians of that generation (generations being on his mind, 3:16), besides it's ongoing application about the milk list. It paints the picture that the land of Israel will be burnt, like the parable in Mt 22, but also comforts the believers who will gain things that accompany salvation and inherit what is promised (which, to be clear, is not the land, as chs 11-13 show).
5A. The warning of 4-6 is that that generation was privileged to taste the 'powers of the coming messianic age' which had come--the Spirit, the mission (Pentecost). To quit participation in that work was to 'crucify the Son of God all over again.' There is no other warning like it. So for that generation of Israel, the situation is totally decisive.
These reasons are also why there is nothing Judaic in the vision of the 2nd coming. Or you might say there is no time allowed for such in the vision of the 2nd coming. It is a very quick transition from the last rebellion (Rev 20) over to a NHNE which I'm not convinced is physical as we know it. Not when God and Christ are the temple and the light that replaces the sun. You can collect all the NT passages on the 2nd coming and not find anything restoring or re-using the system of Judaism as it was. The last rebellion might use it falsely.
