This is a dramatised account of Edward Ellis' biography of David Crockett's political life in the 1830s, after life on the wild frontier. Crockett kept government and its spending to a minimum, but Washington was having more impact on him than he was on it. On a trip home to Tennessee between terms, an astounding confrontation takes place, and Crockett has to try to rectify things.

It is in the format of a movie script. Lohse has done his homework and has captured the style of English very well, yet stays within reach of the modern audience. But the moral of the story will be shocking. It is framed very well, and we share in the shock or surprise of Ellis the period biographer as well. The material lightens up now and then by drawing a parallel to the 'arranged' marriage of Marion Gray to Jackson's favored candidate, Adam Huntsman. Miss Gray fights for her independence from the arrangement in the same way that the farmer, Horatio Bunce, confronts Crockett for his own independence fiscally.
