We have the capacity to hate and love someone at the same time. Love and hate are emotions and do not follow physical laws. God loves the world and he hates and abhors people for the things that they do. Sometimes, the best thing to do is completely reject that person, cut them off, refuse to eat with him ,nothing. If someone's God is "hate the sin, love the sinner," those people NEVER cut off people.

I think the only problem with that quote is that love is not strictly an emotion.

I didn't think about that. However, real love sometimes requires cutting people off. And I think that's what drbrumley was getting at.
