An old white bearded Sikh driver was driving a trailer truck. While driving in a road bend a boy on cycle, passing closely lost balance and fell before the rear wheel. Seeing it though the rear view mirror, the driver pulled the brake hard. But it was too late. The boy was crushed under the rear wheel. He alighted and seeing the boy crushed, lied down on the street in grief. Angry people were rushing to the scene of accident with rods.
Often drivers are beaten so badly after such accidents that many die on the spot or become maimed. In such way hundreds of drivers become casualty every month in India’s numerous congested derelict roads. So drivers usually run for life after accidents. If they can drive the vehicle they drive so madly that more accidents occur and then they surrender to nearest police post if fortunate. Often people on motor cycle follow the vehicle or phone to roadside habitations to block it. If caught then the same fate awaits them. If the driver can’t drive away, he runs on foot for life and escape if fortunate or kind women hide him. The hotheaded men then burn the truck or hooligans loot the contents.
But here nothing of those happened. People inflamed by the bloody scene were coming with rods to punish. But seeing the prostate surrendering driver they held their rods still. Good people convinced them that since the boy is crushed by the rear wheel, it can’t be the fault of the driver. So people did not touch the driver. Some even consoled the old man. When police came they testified on behalf of the driver. He and the truck were released without harm.
Actually turning the other cheek in Christian sense is far more than that. We have fallen in this world after war-burning our paradise (Rev12,7-12 and Indian Puran). Unrepentant and unconverted we are going to burn the earth too, turning it to hell. All the pains and punishments we get here are consequences of our actions, right dues. If we fight with those, we suicidally fight with ourselves to make hell. On the other hand if we take those thankfully we shall be purified by those crosses to be regenerated. By our example others will learn too. So Jesus taught on the cross.
