Homeschool Preparation

So I'd like to homeschool my kids.. though I don't have any yet. Heck, I don't even have a potential wife yet. :chuckle: But anyways, is there anything I might should start thinking about or doing?

So far, I've saved as many grade school textbooks as I could. I have a few A Beka books leftover from the one year I was homeschooled. I've collected a few literature books as well. And I also received a catalog from "Elijah Company" a couple years back that had some interesting info.

Yeah, I realize I'm outrageously early in asking...

First, go here and find out what the law is for homeschooling in your state (Texas is one of the better states for homeschooling, btw).

And, here's a list of my favorite homeschooling/educational links, including Bob Jones University Press (where I get my curriculum). :)

Study about homeschooling first. The sites already supplied are a start.

Find a local home school support group and visit their meetings. Meet a number of parents who are actually doing it and talk to them.

You might even arrange to visit a homeschooling family during a "school day" to watch the rhythm and flow of the process.

Not everybody's cut out for this task, but it can be very rewarding if you decide you are.

I don't have very long to prepare for homeschooling, but my husband wanted me to try a "pre-school" year before he decided if he wanted me to pursue keeping my daughters at home......
Are there any pre-school workbooks or starter "programs"?

ErinMarie, you might want to look into Sonlight While this isn't what my parents have used with me and Elaine, it is beginning to appeal to me, espcially for the elementary years. They start out with a pre-school curriculum. My family only became familar with Sonlight a couple years ago, but I was pleasantly surprized to see we have read many of their suggested books have studied some of their suggested curriculum.

I think you said once that you were homeschooled for 8th grade (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm guessing that was 7-8 years ago. Do you realize that Abeka periodically changes their books so that the older often does not match up with the newer? They just changed 8th grade a couple years back ( I'm guessing around 3 years ago).
I've collected a few literature books as well. And I also received a catalog from "Elijah Company" a couple years back that had some interesting info.
I suggest reading "Teaching the Trivium" by Harvie and Laurie Bluedorn ( Elaine gave you a link to their website, or it is in her signiture).

It's never too soon to start planning.:)
