Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon arrested on fraud charges in border wall fundraising scheme

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon was arrested Thursday after being charged with defrauding hundreds of thousands of donors through his “We Build the Wall” fundraising campaign.

Bannon and three associates were indicted in a federal investigation in the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors allege the four defrauded donors by raising “more than $25 million to build a wall along the southern border of the United States,” but some of that money was used for personal gain.

The United States Postal Inspection Service assisted in the investigation.

Others in the indictment are Timothy Shea, a 49-year-old from Colorado accused of owning a shell company, Brian Kolfage, a disabled Iraq war veteran, and Andrew Badolato, who according to his own website was a contributor to Breitbart News, the conservative publication Bannon used to run. . . .

Prior to his campaign to crowdfund the border wall, Kolfage had been involved in a string of far-right news blogs and groups, one of which had been scrubbed from Facebook for allegedly using fake accounts to drive up website traffic. Some of the sites peddled false conspiracy theories and racist content. As his wall-funding campaign gained national attention, Kolfage had frequently appeared on Fox News and Fox Business, where he defended Trump and slammed his critics for suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

. . . . Inspector-in-Charge Philip R. Bartlett said: “The defendants allegedly engaged in fraud when they misrepresented the true use of donated funds. As alleged, not only did they lie to donors, they schemed to hide their misappropriation of funds by creating sham invoices and accounts to launder donations and cover up their crimes, showing no regard for the law or the truth. This case should serve as a warning to other fraudsters that no one is above the law, not even a disabled war veteran or a millionaire political strategist.”

One of the recently indicted members of the “We Build the Wall” crowdfunding campaign allegedly used money from donors to buy a ship that was seen last month participating in a “boater parade” in honor of President Donald Trump.

As flagged by New York Times reporter Evan Hill, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York claims in its indictment that “We Build the Wall’s” leaders funneled money from the crowdfunding campaign to illegally buy a wide array of luxury goods.

One of their purchases, according to SDNY, was “a 2019 Jupiter Marine boat named ‘Warfighter,'” which was a 40-foot recreational boat.

Get ready for the headline, "Steve Bannon Pardoned." Or at the very least, and if there is time for it, "Steve Bannon's sentence commuted."

I'll bet not. At least not until near the end of Trump's 2nd term.

I suppose it's possible that Trump would throw Bannon under the bus. After all, Trump did throw Bannon out of the White House, so maybe. But as Rusha pointed out, it may also be that Bannon has goods on Trump that Trump wouldn't want to become public, so a little quid pro quo might be in order. We'll just have to wait and see.

Enjoy the show!

Steve Bannon's arrest shines a light on web of anti-immigration conservatives

Steve Bannon’s indictment in a scheme to defraud donors to a fundraising campaign to help build Donald Trump’s wall on the southern boarder cast a spotlight on a web of prominent figures adored in conservative and anti-immigration circles.

On Thursday, Bannon and other leaders of the We Build the Wall nonprofit group were indicted by a federal grand jury in Manhattan for scheming to “defraud hundreds of thousands of donors” in relation to the online fundraising campaign.

But the list of well known names associated with We Build the Wall goes far beyond the figure of Donald Trump’s former campaign manager and populist firebrand Bannon.

The group’s website is a roll call of top figures in Republican and conservative circles.

It lists Kris Kobach, the former Kansas secretary of state and a prominent Trump cheerleader, as its attorney general. Bannon was the advisory board chairman. Erik Prince, founder of the private military contractor Blackwater USA, is a member of the organization’s advisory board. Former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, an icon in conservative anti-immigration circles, is also on the advisory board, as is former Milwaukee county sheriff Dave Clarke and former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling.

Bannon, the former chairman of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign who would later go on to serve as Trump’s chief strategist in the White House before being fired, was one of four names in charges unsealed on Thursday. Kobach at one point used We Build the Wall’s email list to fundraise for his campaign for Senate. In 2019 Kobach said the nonprofit had the support of Donald Trump and the president had given it his “blessing”.
