2Ti 2:14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2Ti 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2Ti 2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2Ti 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
The context of what the apostle Paul was addressing was an error coming from Hymenaeus and Philetus saying the resurrection is past already.
Context is key in seeing this issue Timothy had to address in this epistle from Paul. "Charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit"
Paul called it vain babblings, and it would increase unto more ungodliness.It was going to eat as a canker.
Paul is intructing Timothy to study to shew thyself approved by God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.
Study is only understud when we read the rest of that verse " rightly dividing the word of truth".
What is the word of truth ?
Hymenaeus and Philetus were saying the resurrection is past already.
The resurrection is part of the gospel. The death, burial, and ressurrection. If you take the resurrection out of it, you separate it.
It has to be together. That is what Paul meant, not to separate the gospel, rightly divide it, the death, burial and resurrection.
Paul says in Ephessians 1:13. they heard the word of truth the gospel
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
