Well, I am Director of Music Ministries at a United Methodist church near Nashville, TN. We tried having one service with traditional music and one with contemporary music, but the latter was so poorly attended, we decided to switch to all traditional. Our hymns are accompanied by organ, and most of the choir anthems are accompanied by piano. That being said, occasionally someone will do something a bit more contemporary for special music. I have sung some slightly more contemporary songs, accompanying myself on piano, while others have done gospel songs or the like. Long story short, for church music I generally prefer fairly traditional music. Much contemporary Christian music is designed to be danced to, or listened to, and is often performed with amplified instruments, which tend to discourage participation from the majority of the congregants. Traditional hymns encourage more participation in the worship, generally speaking.
