21 year old is sentenced to 15 years hard labor for trying to steal a propaganda piece from the hotel room. 15 years ?!!? I pray that God will make a way out for him.

(CNN)North Korea has sentenced an American student to 15 years of hard labor after accusing him of removing a political banner from a hotel.

The U.S. State Department fired back Wednesday, saying the punishment doesn't fit the alleged crime.

The sentence against University of Virginia student Otto Frederick Warmbier is "unduly harsh," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, calling for his release.

Warmbier gets escorted Wednesday at the North Korean Supreme Court.

The United States urges North Korea "to pardon him and to grant him special amnesty and immediate release on humanitarian grounds," Toner said.

It's hardly surprising given the recent disappearance of North Korea's (nuclear capable?) submarine just as US and South Korean forces conduct joint war games.

Nonetheless dismaying though.

I was stationed in S. Korea for two years. Why anyone would want to go to N. Korea in the first place is beyond my understanding. Second, he should known that the N. Koreans are harsh. Third, that our relations with them are very sour and they would like very much to make an example of an American such as that young man. Whatever country one visits they are under their laws.

A stupid stunt by a stupid kid...Take a good look all you leftists this is socialism/marxism/communism in action, and this is what you want America to look like? I know you don't but, if you think that the road your traveling doesn't lead to slavery, tyranny, & despotism to the people over time you would be dead wrong...Just keep surrendering your liberties & rights and we will be living in a third world socialist toilet just like these people.

I agree with Bradley D. above. It would appear to be a lapse of sanity for any American to intentionally go to North Korea.

Heck, leftists in this nation are ushering in this style of tyranny in America with their now soft socialism they are embracing. This is the end result of socialism.

I don't know how the kid thought that they wouldn't find the banner in his bags/suitcase.

North Korea has a missing submarine, two defense officials told Fox News Friday.
One official told Fox the submarine is a 70-foot Yono class "midget" submarine that is diesel powered and has a crew of two, with room for a squad of saboteurs. It was unclear who may have been on board.
North Korea does not operate large ballistic missile submarines, such as the US Navy's Ohio-class fleet.
Fox News has learned North Korea has not asked the United States to assist in search and rescue efforts.
On Thursday, North Korea responded to new sanctions from South Korea by firing short-range ballistic missiles into the sea in a show of defiance and vowing to "liquidate" all remaining South Korean assets at former cooperative projects in the North.
The moves are the latest in an escalating standoff between the Koreas that began in January when North Korea detonated what it said was an "H-bomb of justice," its fourth nuclear test.
Since then, the North has launched a long-range rocket and the South has shut a jointly-run factory park, slapped sanctions on the North, and begun large-scale war games with the United States.
North Korea responded by threatening nuclear strikes on South Korea and the US mainland.
The missile firing came a day after North Korean media printed photos of what appeared to be a mock-up of a nuclear warhead.
Also, South Korea's spy agency told lawmakers Friday that the number of North Korean cyber-attacks on the South has doubled over the past month.
The Air Force's top officer, Gen. Mark Welsh, told Fox News on March 7 at the State of the Air Force meeting in the Pentagon that, while the actions of North Korea are "very worrisome," the country does not have the capability to put a nuclear warhead on top of a missile and shoot it at the United States.
Hours later, North Korea warned of preemptive nuclear strikes after the United States and South Korea began holding their biggest ever war games.
This week, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said he was confident that the US military could knock out any North Korean ballistic missile in the sky.
Tensions remain high after North Korea's recent nuclear test and rocket launch, which prompted the United Nations to adopt tough new sanctions.
Fox News' Lucas Tomlinson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

You're being ridiculous. The people who would have America resembling anything like the tyrannical state of North Korea are those who would deprive people of the very rights that we value in the West. Do you support re-criminalizing homosexuality and policing the sexual mores of people for example? Cranks like Nick M et al would have a state where they'e put to death. Do you agree with that? Thankfully there's as much chance of crackpot fundamentalism being established as rule as there is the alarmist rhetoric that you're coming out with.

Listen up Artie, we have an entire party which is flirting with "socialism" and even some posters on this site who tout socialism and have no idea what it is, most notably the ignoramus Purex. What you see in the images in this thread is the iron hand of socialism/marxism/communism, yet they tout that soft socialism does not lead to this eventually because it does. You seem to be worried about homosexuality and other deviant social behaviors which are much more peripheral issues than you are concerned with the natural rights of all individuals such as free speech (regardless if you agree), private property rights (the government does not have the right to steal from you to give equal shares to others), the right to defend oneself (right to keep & bear arms), the right to assemble peaceably (not riot or incite one). You may not be able to distinguish the enemy from your viewpoint but, marxism...soft or hard, is absolutely unacceptable and unless you are living on an island somewhere (oops you are :chuckle:), the current rioting in this nation is being funded by marxist groups...entities within this nation attempting to destroy America from within. Ever heard of REVCOM ?(Revolutionary Communist Party of America) they were funding and stoking the recent riots in Chicago at the Trump rally. I did find it funny that the REVCOM representative exclaimed pointing at the venue where Trump was to speak " There is fascism going on in there", now maybe it is just me but, a communist pointing at a self made billionaire (in a free nation I might add) calling him a fascist is laughable & oxymoronic at the same time. The point is Artie, you may be all good with your freedom being encroached by mob rule, or the usurpation of you liberty & rights by the government but, I can assure you Americans will fight to keep these things. Homosexuality and other sexual deviant, unnatural behaviors are just part & parcel to the social decay within western culture IMO.

RM, I've heard it all before and it's just sheer lunacy and alarmist rhetoric. Some of your brethren think Britain will be under Sharia law in a few years and that's just so ignorant and beyond laughable to be even funny. Neither America or Britain are going to turn into some despot state like North Korea. You may not like plenty of governmental policies but then who does? You're not in danger of being carted off to jail for 15 years for having an anti government stance and you simply never will be. I'm not 'fine' with anyone's freedom being encroached by 'mob rule' but then I don't happen to live in a communist dictatorship and neither do you, or will you unless you move out of the West.

Where it comes to free speech then I'm a firm adherent of it despite what that idiot Nick M likes to 'think'. If you're an advocate for civil freedom and liberty then the reason I brought up homosexuality was because crackpots like Nick would have America as a state far closer akin to the likes of North Korea by summarily executing consenting adults for 'sexual immorality' et al. You think Americans would sit back and let the country become a theocratic state? Would you support that? If so then you're hardly one for civil freedom and liberty yourself.
