There is perhaps a 3rd option. Depending on how our eyesight works, it could be they were uncapable of recognizing Him. The mind fills in a lot of gaps in our vision. Maybe some of these gaps could not be accurately filled in before Jesus ascended to the Father.
You are describing your own theology, not open theism.
You are the one who believes freewill reduces purpose and you emphasis it strongly enough to claim that freewill (even your own freewill) reduces God.
That is the opposite of what open theism teaches.
