Evangelicals Made a Bad Bargain With Trump

That's what all the liberals are crying about. They reckon that something calling itself the Supreme Court is going to ban abortion because Donaldtrump is Hitler.

Haven't you been paying attention?

Why would "conservatives" think that Trump would have been interested in overturning abortion laws? This isn't about "liberals" crying about anything you daft crank. Get a grip...for once. Get real.

Trump will allow women to have abortions if he gets a second term anyway, everyone sane knows this already. What's wrong with you? What, you think he's gonna overturn the laws on abortion?!

:AMR:

trump is not a Christian and he is certainly not prolife. The only thing he has mastered is gaining a cultish following. He is the new Jim Jones but far more lethal. trump’s body count is far higher.

Everything with Trump is transactional, he does nothing if there's not something in it for him. What still bothers me is how many on the religious right were ready to be part of that transactional relationship. The ones in the think tanks, on the commissions, in the Capitol, it's about power - how to get it, how to keep it. The rank and file, they think they're 'spiritual warriors,' protecting Trump from the Devil and the deep blue Democrats. These are the ones with the Trump hats at the Trump rallies and Trump flags on their trucks and boats, who go to church on Sunday and hear their pastors tell them that Trump will protect the Christian 'way of life.' How do you get through to that mindset? I don't know if you can.

Stripe's only interested in changing the subject. This thread's about evangelicals and he wants it to be about something else.

You don't think that abortion is an important topic for evangelicals, a strong motivator for their voting decisions?

We're not talking about Democrats, are we? We're talking about evangelicals who made a bad deal with Trump. But that's uncomfortable, so you'll try to shift direction.

How can you pretend to exclude them from the discussion? They're part of the equation.

So go make your own thread. You and Stripe like to derail threads, I know. But this one is about evangelicals, the deal they made with Trump and what the fallout of that deal is going to be, which includes, but isn't limited to this:

For starters, by overlooking and excusing the president’s staggering array of personal and public corruptions, Trump’s evangelical supporters have forfeited the right to ever again argue that character counts in America’s political leaders. They might try, but if they do, they will be met with belly laughs. It’s not that their argument is invalidated; it is that because of their glaring hypocrisy, they have sabotaged their credibility in making the argument.

and this:

But if evangelical supporters of Trump are honest, they should admit—at least to themselves, if not to the rest of the world—that something has gone terribly amiss and that the power they have achieved is coming at the expense of the faith they proclaim.

and this:

I’ve argued in these pages before that the Trump-evangelical alliance has inflicted enormous damage on the Christian witness in America, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z. Unfortunately, the stories keep pouring in.

Let's hope the more rational ones are feeling pretty embarrassed about things right now...

I don’t consider them to be Christians nor do I bother trying to get through to them. I simply write them off. They made the choice to be willfully complicit.
