Trump's angry words to Georgia governor reverberate in state capitals as governors move to reopen states

President Donald Trump's surprisingly public rebuke of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp's reopening plans is still reverberating through state capitals across the country and is contributing to decisions by some governors to take a slower approach in opening businesses in their state, Republican officials in a half-dozen states told CNN.

... this President demands that West Point recall ...

poor poor silly obsessed Canadian

the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces doesn't "demand", he "commands", as the title suggests

Similar to QE2 in your military, acting through her surrogate Julie Payette

and the cadets are military personnel

People still listen to CNN?

how quaint

People still listen to Trump? :noway:

Trump is playing both sides of the issue by saying, on the one hand, that he "strongly disagrees" with the governor of Georgia for reopening the state, while at the same time saying that he thinks the Georgia governor should "do what he thinks is right."

how quaint

The President provides the commencement address to one of the service academies every year which results in a 4 year rotation - this year it would have been West Point!

This year it will be West Point - and I guarantee you the cadets will be ecstatic.

They will then be tested off campus and undergo 14 days of self-isolation before being allowed to attend the ceremony!

They are military service members!

Taking orders from superiors is part of their training!

The class of '20 Med students will be forced to withdraw from their early Internships to aid in combating the CONVID-19 Pandemic so they too can be tested and remain idle ...

They won't be idle!

My son is a service member! He just took a new posting as a trainer! For classes that aren't meeting! They are kept busy doing work other than training!

...so this President can be seen taking a "victory lap" - all at the expense of these cadets and the nation!

I guarantee you that if you tried to sell that crap to any of the cadets they'd stand in line to punch you in the nose. Trump is their Commander in Chief and these cadets, who have been training for four years to be leaders themselves, know better than anybody who hasn't served, the pressures and responsibilities of command and the weight their commanders bear. They have nothing but scorn and enmity for those who try to undermine the chain of command.

And if I told them you were a foreign national who tries his hardest, every single day, to undermine our national leader, their Commander in Chief - they'd toss you off the Bear Mountain Bridge into the Hudson.

And this is nonsense.

Huh? Show your sources. I see nothing but a baseless assertion. But that's all I ever see from you.

Here is a source for my argument:
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are part of the light that comes from the sun. The UV spectrum is higher in frequency than visible light and lower in frequency compared to x-rays. This also means that the UV spectrum has a larger wavelength than x-rays and a smaller wavelength than visible light and the order of energy, from low to high, is visible light, UV, than x-rays. As a water treatment technique, UV is known to be an effective disinfectant due to its strong germicidal (inactivating) ability. UV disinfects water containing bacteria and viruses and can be effective against protozoans like, Giardia lamblia cysts or Cryptosporidium oocysts. UV has been used commercially for many years in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, beverage, and electronics industries, especially in Europe. In the US, it was used for drinking water disinfection and treatment in the early 1900s but was abandoned due to high operating costs, unreliable equipment, and the expanding popularity of disinfection by chlorination.

Because of safety issues associated with the reliance of chlorination and improvement in the UV technology, UV has experienced increased acceptance in both municipal and household drinking water treatment systems. There are few large-scale UV water treatment plants in the United States although there are more than 2,000 such plants in Europe. There are two classes of disinfection systems certified and classified by the NSF under Standard 55 – Class A and Class B Units.

Class A — These ultraviolet water treatment systems must have an ‘intensity & saturation’ rating of at least 40,000 uwsec/cm2 and possess designs that will allow them to disinfect and/or remove microorganisms from contaminated water. Affected contaminants should include bacteria and viruses
"Class A point-of-entry and point-of-use systems covered by this Standard are designed to inactivate and/or remove microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts, from contaminated water. Systems covered by this standard are not intended for the treatment of water that has obvious contamination or intentional source such as raw sewage, nor are systems intended to convert wastewater to drinking water. The systems are intended to be installed on visually clear water."

Class B — These ultraviolet water treatment systems must have an ‘intensity & saturation’ rating of at least 16,000 uw-sec/cm2 and possess designs that will allow them to provide supplemental bactericidal treatment of water already deemed ‘safe’. i.e., no elevated levels of E. coli. or a standard plate count of less than 500 colonies per 1 ml. NSF Standard 55 "Class B" UV systems are designed to operate at a minimum dosage and are intended to "reduce normally occurring non-pathogenic or nuisance microorganisms only." The "Class B" or similar non-rated UV systems are not intended for the disinfection of "microbiologically unsafe water."

Notice first that UV has been known to be a disinfectant for more than 100 years.

Notice that the water is placed in direct contact with the disinfectant. The disinfectant is beamed directly through the water.

This is the same way bottled water is disinfected with sunlight. As the bottles, plastic or glass, must be clear the UV rays come in direct contact with the water. Just like how the same UV rays will give you a sunburn as they come in direct contact with your skin if your skin is exposed to them for too long.

Now let's look at UV and fresh air for medical treatment 100 years ago.

Coronavirus and the Sun: a Lesson from the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

Richard Hobday

Fresh air, sunlight and improvised face masks seemed to work a century ago; and they might help us now.

by Richard Hobday

When new, virulent diseases emerge, such SARS and Covid-19, the race begins to find new vaccines and treatments for those affected. As the current crisis unfolds, governments are enforcing quarantine and isolation, and public gatherings are being discouraged. Health officials took the same approach 100 years ago, when influenza was spreading around the world. The results were mixed. But records from the 1918 pandemic suggest one technique for dealing with influenza — little-known today — was effective. Some hard-won experience from the greatest pandemic in recorded history could help us in the weeks and months ahead.

Put simply, medics found that severely ill flu patients nursed outdoors recovered better than those treated indoors. A combination of fresh air and sunlight seems to have prevented deaths among patients; and infections among medical staff.[1] There is scientific support for this. Research shows that outdoor air is a natural disinfectant. Fresh air can kill the flu virus and other harmful germs. Equally, sunlight is germicidal and there is now evidence it can kill the flu virus.

`Open-Air’ Treatment in 1918

During the great pandemic, two of the worst places to be were military barracks and troop-ships. Overcrowding and bad ventilation put soldiers and sailors at high risk of catching influenza and the other infections that often followed it.[2,3] As with the current Covid-19 outbreak, most of the victims of so-called `Spanish flu’ did not die from influenza: they died of pneumonia and other complications.

When the influenza pandemic reached the East coast of the United States in 1918, the city of Boston was particularly badly hit. So the State Guard set up an emergency hospital. They took in the worst cases among sailors on ships in Boston harbour. The hospital’s medical officer had noticed the most seriously ill sailors had been in badly-ventilated spaces. So he gave them as much fresh air as possible by putting them in tents. And in good weather they were taken out of their tents and put in the sun. At this time, it was common practice to put sick soldiers outdoors. Open-air therapy, as it was known, was widely used on casualties from the Western Front. And it became the treatment of choice for another common and often deadly respiratory infection of the time; tuberculosis. Patients were put outside in their beds to breathe fresh outdoor air. Or they were nursed in cross-ventilated wards with the windows open day and night. The open-air regimen remained popular until antibiotics replaced it in the 1950s.

Doctors who had first-hand experience of open-air therapy at the hospital in Boston were convinced the regimen was effective. It was adopted elsewhere. If one report is correct, it reduced deaths among hospital patients from 40 per cent to about 13 per cent.[4] According to the Surgeon General of the Massachusetts State Guard:

`The efficacy of open air treatment has been absolutely proven, and one has only to try it to discover its value.’

Fresh Air is a Disinfectant

Patients treated outdoors were less likely to be exposed to the infectious germs that are often present in conventional hospital wards. They were breathing clean air in what must have been a largely sterile environment. We know this because, in the 1960s, Ministry of Defence scientists proved that fresh air is a natural disinfectant.[5] Something in it, which they called the Open Air Factor, is far more harmful to airborne bacteria — and the influenza virus — than indoor air. They couldn’t identify exactly what the Open Air Factor is. But they found it was effective both at night and during the daytime.

Their research also revealed that the Open Air Factor’s disinfecting powers can be preserved in enclosures — if ventilation rates are kept high enough. Significantly, the rates they identified are the same ones that cross-ventilated hospital wards, with high ceilings and big windows, were designed for.[6] But by the time the scientists made their discoveries, antibiotic therapy had replaced open-air treatment. Since then the germicidal effects of fresh air have not featured in infection control, or hospital design.

The rest of this very interesting and informative article can be read at the following link. https://medium.com/@ra.hobday/corona...ic-509151dc806

We treat people exactly the opposite today. Hospitals do not allow patients access to outdoor air, nor do we use the natural disinfectant of sunshine. We're too "smart" for that. We have too much "science" for that.

1000 cadets are expected to return to West Point using commercial flights and all the unnecessary exposure that entails!

Given the risks, the Naval Academy is holding "a virtual graduation" and they aren't located within 50 miles of New York City - the epicenter of the Pandemic

They won't be idle!

My son is a service member! He just took a new posting as a trainer! For classes that aren't meeting! They are kept busy doing work other than training!
After being tested for COVID-19, the cadets are to be subjected to 14 days of self-isolation in order to attend the graduation - with over a million Americans testing positive and 25 million recently unemployed, these cadets will be questioning as to why they are being isolated on the West Point campus for 2 weeks when they could be of infinitely more use serving during a national crisis!

A true "Commander in Chief" realizes that he has a responsibility for the welfare of those he leads - not to arbitrarily place their lives at risk to satisfy the ego of one man to provide him with a "photo op!"

The cadets have been trained to follow orders, but they have also been trained to value the lives of the troops who will serve under them - what part of their training will reconcile their Commander in Chief confining to their West Point campus for 2 weeks rather than deploying them to use their skills in the service of a nation engulfed in a pandemic!

“Suppose we hit the body with a tremendous ultraviolet or just very powerful light,”
You can do this to water. You can't do this to humans. It will burn skin, possibly cause cancer, and the UV light will not penetrate inside the body. If you had strong enough light to penetrate into the body, you may manage to kill the virus, but you'd be left with a smoking pile of ashes, not a human patient.

The statement shows complete ignorance of basic science. He doesn't need to be an expert in all fields of science, but he should learn how to keep his mouth shut on topics he is ignorant of. I suggest you do the same.

Yes - they're trained to take orders and put themselves (and their men) in harms way. It's an integral part of the job.

Not to be wastefully exposed to disease.

I guess this comes down to you irrational obsessive foreign Trump haters buying into the media's lie that this is "wasteful" or "unnecessary" or harmful or putting them at risk.

Relax.
Calm down.
They're US servicemen.
I guarantee you that they have absolutely hated being sent home from what has been the greatest adventure of their young lives so far, their training to be tomorrow's military leaders.
I guarantee you that they have been champing at the bit, eager to get back in the saddle.

I hope that the US is keeping its pilots isolated!

what an incredibly foolish way to handle a vital part of our military

i hope they're being exposed to the virus and closely monitored, so they develop immunities and resistance and are ready to go into battle when called, without the fear that 10 days later they'll be dead from a virus they've been protected from like fragile teacups

(Trump) should learn how to keep his mouth shut on topics he is ignorant of.

It's unlikely - it's a persona that has served him well for the entirety of his 73 years, a persona that has led to a lifetime of unbelievable, incredible success.

Personally, I find it off-putting. If I was standing next to him at a bus stop, I could manage polite small talk and then when the bus came, sit as far away as possible. And I'd do the same with Obama and both Clintons.
