Sorry to hear this. Not so well known as a big A list star but always a dependable character actor and brought class to his craft.

how did dr carter make progress on finding the dam site. day to day?

yes, but dr carter had to find it so cage could go and try to find the omega - you see cage returning (twice? three times?) and each time carter is looking for it and finally finds it
since cage is the only repository of progress, how does carter make progress?
it's shown, for example, how cage catches rita up each day
but if cage is killed before checking in with carter each day, how does the search for the dam site progress?
