State police are responding to a report of a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive, school officials said.

Police are reporting multiple shooting victims.

State police sources said one shooter is dead. Earlier reports of a second shooter are unconfirmed.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,” police said.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., parents said.

Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.

A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school. Area hospitals have been alerted.

This is absolutely disgusting! 18 children dead. Who could ever do such a thing....:sigh:

Today is my son's birthday. He is turning 6 and in elementary school as we speak. I could not imagine anything like this occurring in my community but then again, no one does.

:(

"We have labored long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors."
-Alan Moore, Watchmen

Again and again, we see men driven to madness.
Again and again, we see them tossed like yesterday's cat litter from jobs which promised decades of security and required years of training and financial risk.

We are sitting on a volcano, one which has been building since we handed our country, our culture, and our future to greedy men who operated from the shadows and played us against each other when times got tough.

All the religious and political and economic ideals and platitudes won't lessen the pressure one pound-per-square-inch.

We are coming to the end of America as we know it, because what we have known is an illusion.
Soon we will face hard reality, as will our children, in a time of upheaval that will shatter most of what has been built in this country over the course of the past century.

What follows is up to those who survive.

Will they build something new out of the ashes?
Or will they allow themselves to be swept up by greed and manipulation like the rest of the world?

The answer is always, of course, more guns, bigger guns, and more people with bigger guns. If those 4th graders had all been packin' we'd be hearing a different story!

Only days before Christmas.

This is an incredibly tragic day. I grieve for those children, those parents, those families, the teachers, the community.

Flippant comments regarding this horrific and evil deed are way out of line.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

ABC's medical commentator is saying "This is the face of mental illness."

I don't think, Knight, that the epidemic is the shootings, at this school, at the shopping mall recently, at the movie theater not so long ago. Really, I think that this is the face of a society that has lost it's Compass. The media is talking about Obama being "the nation's comforter!" Oh, Father God, please help us. You are our Comforter!

I can't imagine the pain too many parents are going through now.

If you take away the guns, people will just make bombs and we will probably never catch them.

The biggest school mass murder in US history was a series of 3 bombs that went off in a Michigan school back in 1927... I think they killed 45 people.

Timothy McVeigh made his devastating bomb with fertilizer and diesel fuel.. very simple things to purchase.

My feelings is that we have become such a mobile and dysfunctional country that there are going to be more and more people that slip through the cracks and commit these kind of atrocities.

Until sin is removed from the world there is going to be no feasible way to stop these things.

No, just one. If just one nine year old kid had a gun, had been taught how to use it and had the will to use it...we likely wouldn't be talking about how twenty plus people had been shot dead. I know nine year old kids who meet that criteria.

Imagine if just one armed adult had been there, likewise having been taught how to shoot and having the will to do so.

How long do you suppose it took the shooter to shoot and kill everyone that he did? How many opportunities would just one person have had to stop him?

To make the point, if I or any of the twenty people I can easily name had been there and had been armed, we would not be talking about how many people died but rather how many people could have.

Today isn't a day to be clever or sarcastic or to say I told you so or to advocate for or against gun control or to prognosticate about our future. Today is a day to mourn and pray.
