In honor of Fellowship 'Week, it's time for my annual repost of Tom Lehrer's song "National Brotherhood Week"

Spoken Intro:
One week of every year is designated National Brotherhood Week. This is just one of many such weeks honoring various worthy causes. One of my favorites is National Make-fun-of-the-handicapped Week which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of as you know. During National Brotherhood Week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood. This year, for example, on the first day of the week Malcolm X was killed which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is. I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another and I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that. Here's a song about National Brotherhood Week.

Click here for the tune so you can sing along...:
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don't let 'em in your school.

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It's American as apple pie.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
It's National Everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood Week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It's only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

I end up singin' along every year!

This and "Smut" are my favorite Tom Lehrer songs...

O.K., everyone! for the first night of Fellowship Week! Whoo-hoo!

In an effort to get ot know one another better, grab a beverage from the corner snack area (there are cold beers and brand-name sodas in the fridge there and a pitcher of properly brewed iced tea...and check the freezer. Chilled glass mugs and plenty of ice) and get a plate of snacks. I've got hot appetizers ready in a few minutes.

Once you're comfortable, answer the following:

What is the nicest thing you've ever done for someone?

What is the nicest thing ever done for you? (Here on earth by a mere mortal. I already know the best thing ever was done for us by Christ.)

What would you do for others if money and time were no object?

Who is the person in your life whom you value most?

What's the best advice you've ever gotten?

When you're done writing down your answers and posting 'em for all the other party guests to see, c'mon outside. The heated pool is big enough for all of us, and I had the exterminator put out some of those zapper things and some kind of spray he has so we don't have to contend with any flighty-bitey things.

Let's Party!

Thanks, Catty.

I'm ready!

Once you're comfortable, answer the following:

What is the nicest thing you've ever done for someone?

Married her.

What is the nicest thing ever done for you?

Divorced her.

What would you do for others if money and time were no object?

Money should never be an obstacle when bringing happiness to others..

Who is the person in your life whom you value most?

Mrs. BillyBob. [followed closely by the cashier at the liquor store]

What's the best advice you've ever gotten?

"Don't point a gun at anyone you don't intend to shoot, and don't shoot anyone you don't intend to kill" [thanks Dad!]

Probably shared with them about Christ.

What is the nicest thing ever done for you? (Here on earth by a mere mortal. I already know the best thing ever was done for us by Christ.)

Um... probably when my parents raised me right.

What would you do for others if money and time were no object?

I'm not sure... ask them what they wanted or needed I guess

Who is the person in your life whom you value most?

Well, God for one, but if you mean a mortal human, my mother.

What's the best advice you've ever gotten?

"Keep your head on straight."
Quoted by my dad.
