How exactly does extreme idealism pose a danger to anyone? A strong opinion about something has never hurt anyone.

Extremism, fanatical devotion to beliefs that are destructive to society is something quite different from extreme idealism. The Nazi's managed to hurt some people. Pol Pot managed to hurt some people as did Stalin. Napolean and their ilk. The Jim Jones massacre managed to hurt some people. A strong opinion will be backed up with solid data. Otherwise it is just a strong feeling. bybee

Barbarian chuckles:
No, I'm just pointing out to you what a moron you were for supporting it.

Yep. And like most Bush apologists, you are now fleeing the consequences in full denial.

Barbarian observes:
And yes, enjoying just a little, your outrage as you suddenly realize the door swings both ways.

I wouldn't describe you as "mythical." "Unrealistic" would be a good choice.

Barbarian suggests:
Pray that Obama is a better man than Dubya was.

If so, you've given us no reason to think so.

Maybe it's too late for you to be revising what you wrote.

The Nazis and Commies murdered millions of poeple. It was the action, not the "feeling," that did the damage.

Freedom of speech is there for a reason. We need to be reminded of the Nazis and the Commies so we never forget just how many poeple they've murdered. That means keeping them around and allowing them to voice their opinions. Remember the old phrase, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

There has been in America, since it was founded, a constant stubborn insistence that a man's opinions should be entirely free and openly expressed, if he so chooses.

There is an alternative residue (usually among the powerful and the extremists) that thinks this sort of freedom is too dangerous to permit.

Hence the Alien and Sedition Acts, McCarthyism, and the Patriot Act.

It's time for us to trim it back a bit. Obama pledged to do this, but power is a seductive thing. Pray for him.

Bad things never happen if bad intentions are not thought, expressed, rallied to, and carried through.

Jesus had something to say about that - lusting after a woman being the same as adultery and all that.

Maybe that's why momma always said if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything. Wise words.
