Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Anti-Gay Therapy

The Supreme court rejected an attempt to get rid of the ban on inflicting so-called conversion therapy on children.

The U.S. Supreme Court let stand a California law that bans licensed therapists from working with children to change their sexual orientation from gay to straight, rejecting an appeal that said the measure violates religious rights.

The rebuff leaves intact a federal appeals court decision upholding California’s 2012 first-of-its-kind law. The measure prohibits the form of counseling known as “conversion therapy.”

The ban was challenged by three people, led by licensed therapist and minister Donald Welch, who said it interferes with their right to practice their religious beliefs.

California officials urged the Supreme Court not to hear the appeal, saying the law doesn’t restrict what religious leaders can say, except in the context of a state-licensed therapy session.

The law applies to licensed doctors, psychologists, family therapists and social workers, and it subjects violators to discipline by state licensing bodies. The law lets licensed providers refer minors to religious leaders.

The case is Welch v. Brown, 16-845.

It is good to know that, at least in some states, children are and will continue to be protected form this sort of abuse.

What if the child is experiencing unwanted same-sex attraction, and wants help?

They want help or their family is demanding that they want help? There is a difference.

That asside:
conversion therapy isn't based on any findings or research. THose who engge in it can't define just what help they are providing and they can't identify what qualifies as a sucessfull conclusion to their "therapy'.

Joseph Nioclosi the late leader of NARTH felt that three years old was a fine age to put a child into ex-gay therpay.

Conversion therapy includes such practices as:
Forcing children to remove all clothing during both individual and group therapy sessions.

Nudity in front of the individual that the child has the "troubled relationship" with is encouraged as is naked “cuddling” espically with girls. If the father is unavailable then a substitute male is used for this.

Girls are encouraged to shower with their father.

Electrodes may be placed on the child's genitals in order to provide painful shocks when they are exposed to gay themed images.

“Hold therapy”. The child is physically restrained while the therapist screams at them and encourages the child’s parents to express their hatred and disgust for the child. There have been some reports of parents being encouraged to hit, slap or kick the child. This will continue until the child admits that they are hurting their family and that they hate themselves for being gay.

Children are forced to violently beat an effigy of his/her client’s mother saying that they want their mother to die.

Other conversion therapy methods include sedation, isolation, sensory deprivation, physical restraints and hypnosis and anti-psychotic drugs.

All these methods have been documented by researchers and through court cases.

It probably doesn't!

But isn't much of that stuff already illegal? Forcing a kid to get naked, or to have unwanted contact with an adult, or to physically torture them...

Why not just keep that stuff illegal, and prosecute the criminals who perpetrate those crimes?

Why the need to outlaw any attempts to help someone get rid of unwanted same-sex attraction?

If someone is plagued by unwanted same-sex attraction, they should not be allowed to seek help?

Simply an option.
Perhaps non-conversion introspection, which poses the question: as by what or who's means does same sex attraction serve as a plague?

Glassjester , who conservatives call "unwanted same sex attraction " is nothing but guilt which youngsters from Christian families have been brainwashed into feeling .
There are many young gay people with supportive parents and family who have NOT been subject to this bogus "therapy " .
"Conversion therapy " is a dangerous fraud which has caused many young gay people to commit suicide because of mental abuse which has caused overwhelming feelings of shame which they should never have been subject to . It SHOULD be illegal.
There is no such thing as an "ex gay ". All such people have been brainwashed , and they invariably revert eventually .

Simply an option? I am not sure what you mean.

The parents should have the option of helping their child get rid of unwanted same-sex attraction? Or... should any such attempt be illegal?

Is it possible for someone to experience unwanted attractions?

if i'm the parent of a child suffering from psychological delusions, whether they be "i'm a firetruck" or "i'm a homo", i'm sure not interested in having the state usurp my parental duties to raise a normal child

I thought this concerned the individual...
Mayhap the parents are in need of therapy/introspection?

Accept how god made them.

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

You didn't think your malarkey was going to stand did you?

About as well as your malarkey.

Unwanted by the parent or the child?

Either one should be sufficient.

It's not the job of a parent to encourage or even accept every desire their child has. Otherwise we'd have a nation full of obese, sexually amoral, screen-addicted kids. Oh wait...

If so described above. Guilt, shame and threats of eternal damnation are still viable options.

What about therapies that don't involve torture or abuse? Should any and all therapies aimed at getting rid of unwanted same-sex attraction be illegal?

Yes, it's not the parent's call.
