If he was serious at all about his re-election he would never had implemented such a radical change in the law; since the recent demonstrations seemed to suggest that there are many who disagree with the fuel taxes.
A sizeable proportion of the electorate appear to be against the recent changes, which might be detrimental to his re-election in the next few years.
By definition, politicians should always be more concerned about their political survival than the implementation of radical policies which may affect their chances of being re-elected.
